JohnP.McNamaraBS,MS,PhD Dr. McNamara earned a BS in Agricultural Sciences (1976) and an MS in Dairy Sciences (1978) at UniversityofIllinois.Butthebestpartofthatexperiencewasmeetinghislove,Sue,towhomhehas beenmarriedfor45years.FollowingaPhDasthefirstgraduateofthenewFoods&NutritionProgram atUniversityofGA (1982),hedid apost doctoratein Dairy SciencesatUniversityofFL,and then acceptedajobatWashingtonStateUniversity;fromwhichhehasbeenretiredfor5years. HisearlyworkwithDaleBaumanhelpedidentifythekeycontrolsandpathwaysofmilksynthesis whichledtothedevelopmentofrecombinantlyderivedbovinesomatotropin.Inthedoctoralworkhe identifiedsomekeycontrolsofobesityinratandpigmodelsofhumanmetabolismandthenreturned todairyanimalbiochemistry.HisworkatWSUhasidentifiedthekeymetabolicpathwaysthatdefine asuccessfuladaptationandmaintenanceoflactation.Thesestudiesdeterminedtherolesofgeneticand nutritionalcontrolofadiposemetabolism. Inadditiontotheworkondairycattle,herealizedthetremendousinterestincompanionanimals and that pets were not only economically important, but a key part of human development and behavior.Thus, he started one of the first senior level Companion Animal Courses. He also started ageneralintroductorycourseonpetnutritionandhissuccessfultext,PrinciplesofCompanionAnimalNutritionhasbeenusedacrossthe countryandsomeothercountriesandisnowinanew(3rd)edition.
