ELEMENTS OF 1967 HUNTSBERGER PROFESSOR of STATISTICS Iowa State University of Science and Technology STATISTICAL INFERENCE SECOND EDITION ALLYN AND BACON © Copyright, 1967 by allynand BACON, INC. 150 Tremont Street Boston, Mass. 02111 All rights reserved. No part of this book may be reproduced in any form, or by any means, without permission in writing from thepublisher. Printed in the United States ofAmerica Library ofCongress Catalog Card Number: 67-11290 Preface This second edition, like the first, is intended as an intro- duction to some of the basic concepts and techniques of statistical inference. It is hoped that the reader will acquire an appreciation for, and some understanding of, the statistical approach to many types of problems faced by the administrator, the research worker, and other members ofour increasingly complex society. In preparing this revision my primary objective has been to improve upon theearliereditionby reorderingand regroupingmaterial, by including additional examples and figures that have been found effective in the classroom, and by developing more fully those topics forwhich experience indicates clarification would be helpful. In keeping with my original objectives, only those topics that appear to be of interest in diverse fields of application have been added to the contents of the first edition. The major additions are the paired t-test, an elementary treatment of Bayes' Theorem, and an introduction to the analysis ofvariance for two-way classifications. This book may serve as a text for a general course for those who want to know "what statistics is all about," or who need to be familiar with at least the language and fundamental concepts of statistics to achieve additional competence in their chosen fields. Such a course would also provide the necessary background for those who will take more advanced courses in statistics, including the specialized appli- cations. Preface Mathematical prerequisites have been kept to a minimum. A knowledge ofarithmetic and some exposure to algebra are sufficient. I am indebted to those who used the first edition and were kind enoughto offertheircriticisms, comments, and suggestionsforimprove- ment. These have been most helpful. I am especially grateful to Dr. Carol Fuchs for her careful reading ofthe manuscript for this revision, and her many helpful suggestions; and to Mrs. Avonelle Jacobson for her help in the preparation ofthe manuscript. I am indebted to the late Professor Sir Ronald Fisher, Cambridge, to Dr. Frank Yates, Rothamsted, and to Messrs. Oliver and Boyd Ltd., Edinburgh, for permission to reprint Table No. Ill from their book "Statistical Tables for Biological, Agricultural, and Medical Research"; to Professor George W.
