Wisdom, however, is far greater. Wisdom requires having intelligence, but realizing it means nothing if it is not shared. In wisdom, there is a natural sense of giving where there is no fear of loss. It means realizing that the knowledge is measured purely by what we can teach and share with others. For Dr. Cheryl Green, her intelligence made her a social work scholar. It was her wisdom, however, that touched my soul and made her one of my colleagues and “ ” fl dearest friends. Her sense of humor and Cherylisms made the time y by. Cheryl passed on before the formulation of this book. Through her teaching and writing, the hearts of so many social workers like me will never be the same. Although not a day goes by that I do not miss my dearest friend, I remain comforted by the time we shared together. 3GFFIRS 09/12/2014 10:2:16 Pagevi 3GFTOC 09/10/2014 15:45:17 Pagevii Contents Preface xiii Acknowledgments xvii QuickReferenceList xix SECTIONI UtilizingtheDSM-5:Assessment,Planning,andPracticeStrategy Chapter1 GettingStarted 3 Introduction 3 BeginningtheProcess 3 MakingtheDiagnosticAssessment:ToolsThatFacilitatetheAssessment Process 4 RoleofSocialWorkersandOtherMentalHealthProfessionals 4 DevelopmentoftheDSMClassificationSystem:HistoryandReservations 6 DiagnosticLabels 14 AnotherMentalHealthAssessmentMeasure 16 ProfessionalTrainingintheProfessionalCounselingFields 18 Summary 19 QuestionsforFurtherThought 20 References 20 Chapter2 BasicsandApplication 23 UtilizingtheDSM-5inthePracticeSetting 23 WorkingasPartofaTeam:ConnectionsandCollaborations 25 DiagnosisandAssessment:IsThereaDifference? 28 ACombinationApproach:TheDiagnosticAssessment 33 DSM-5UpdatesandStructuralChanges 35 DSM-5:SectionsandAppendices 39 ImportantSectionsintheDSM-5 45 Culture,Age,andGender-RelatedInformation 47 ConceptsofDistress 53 CultureandOtherDiagnosticAssessmentFactorsRelatedtoAge 57 CultureandOtherDiagnosticAssessmentFactorsRelatedtoGender 59 vii 3GFTOC 09/10/2014 15:45:18 Pageviii viii CONTENTS Summary 66 QuestionsforFurtherThought 67 References 67 Chapter3 CompletingtheDiagnosticAssessment 70 BasicsforCompletingaComprehensiveDiagnosticAssessment 70 DSM-5andCompletingtheDiagnosticAssessment 74 ThePrincipalDiagnosis 76 SubtypesandCourseSpecifiers 86 EthicalandLegalConsiderations 101 PullingItAllTogether 102 Summary 104 QuestionsforFurtherThought 105 References 105 Chapter4 Applications 107 Documentation,TreatmentPlanning, andPracticeStrategy 107 TreatmentandInterventionPlanning 116 DevelopingtheTreatmentPlan 120 SelectinganInterventionFramework 123 PracticeStrategyandApplication 127 TypesofTime-LimitedTherapyinMentalHealthPractice 131 Summary 140 QuestionsforFurtherThought 143 References 143 SECTIONII DiagnosticandTreatmentApplications Chapter5 SchizophreniaSpectrumandtheOther PsychoticDisorders 149 SophiaF.Dziegielewski Introduction 149 TowardaBasicUnderstandingoftheConditions 150 UnderstandingIndividualsWhoSufferFromthePsychoticDisorders 151 ImportantFeaturesRelatedtothePsychoticDisorders 153 DSM-5:AssessmentofSymptomsMeasurement 157 OverviewofSchizophreniaSpectrumandOtherPsychoticDisorders 160 Schizophrenia 167 BeginningtheDiagnosticAssessment 173
