That it is still in print testifies to the fact that few of the fundamentals of image-making have changed since digital techniques came to dominate photography. That the book has received so many revisions shows not only the obvious need to keep up with changes in technology, but also that we need to keep abreast of the steady rise of photographers’ skills. Indeed, the most exciting recent development in photography is the steady improvement in photographic abilities. This is evident in the large numbers of stunningly inventive entries—from every corner of the planet—to photographic competitions; in the high quality of coverage of spot-news events by passersby; and it is clear even from the casual photography seen on social networks and picture-sharing sites. Without a doubt, the average standard of photography is far higher than ever. This is not only due to easy access to amazingly high-quality equipment at affordable prices. It is evident that skills and understanding of photography have genuinely grown, and continue to blossom. We have responded to these developments with a thorough revision that takes in developments such as RAW capture, tone-mapping techniques, and diversified approaches to image manipulation and management. We also cover new categories of equipment and software, and touch on the many changes in photographic practice. With this fourth edition, we find ourselves enjoying photography approaching its fecund prime. Major technologies are mature and deeply understood, so it’s now time to enjoy the fruits of the previous years of trial, error, computer crashes, and corrupted files. We are all now familiar with the amazing potency of the internet, and its ability to make a so-called “still” image more mobile than a rocket, sending a picture to a million places around the planet in seconds. In short, the camera in your hand is unquestionably the most elaborate and potent visual tool ever invented. You can enjoy enormous fun with it. You can have your life hugely enriched by its creative returns. And you can make a difference to the world. That is photography’s gift to you, and its power. I hope this books helps you make the most of your photography’s potential.
