Quotationsarearrangedalphabeticallybyauthor,andchronologically(asfaraspossible)withineachauthorentry, withtheyearofthequotationputfirstwhenthisisknown.Thisenablesthereadertobrowsethroughthequotesofa particularperson,andseetheirthoughtsorworksastheydevelopedovertime.Thischronologicalarrangementis specifictothisdictionary,anditmakesthisdictionarymuchmorethanacollectionofbonsmots.Wherepossible,each entryalsoincludesabriefbiographyoftheauthor,andmanyquotationsaresupplementedbycontextualnotes.These willhelpthereadertounderstandandappreciatethequotationsmorefully. Adependablesourceisgivenforeachquotationwherepossible.Wherequotationsareknownfrommanysecondary sourceswithnotraceableprimarysourcetheyaregivenas‘attributed’. Thecomprehensiveindexisarrangedbykeyword.Thisallowsthereadertofindquotationsonaparticularsubject.
