Callibaetis willineri Navás
(BAETIDAE: EPHEMEROPTERA)
Ina recent revision ofthe Argentine species ofCallibaetis (Gillies,1990.
Revta Soco ent argent., 48 (1-4): 15-39) 1 presented evidence for establishing
19 new synonymies, all except 2 ofthem being species describedby L.Navás.
One of the two exceptions was Callibaetisalegre Traver,1944, which I showed
should be regarded as a synonym of the seldom recorded species C. willineri
Navás, 1932. The type of C. willineri was aO imago held in the collection of
the Institutode InvestigacionesEntomológicasSaltainRosariode Lenna. Through
the kindness of theDirector,Sr.ManfredoFritz,1was able to examine thisspeci
mcn and establish the eorreet name for the taxon. Unfortunately,in the course
of retuming this andotherspecimens by post, the parcel went astray and the
type iteontainedwere lost.
It is particularly important that there should be an aecessible type oí
C.willineri sinee Travergave an unusually full deseription ofC.alegre while,
as so often in species deseribed by L. Navás, the taxon was unrecognisable
on the basis of bis written aeeount alone. No other specimens determined by
Navás are know to exist. In these circumstanees,itis eonsidered that the ex
ceptional stepofestablishing a neotype isjustified.
Aeeordingly, 1 hereby designateas neotype a specimen eolleeted by my
self with the following provenanee: URUGUAY,Provincia deMaldonado,from
a pond near Puntadel Este, 13.XII.83, Oimago (in spirit)whit associated nym
phal skin (mounted inbalsam). The type has been depositedinthe collectionof
the Instituto de Investigaciones EntomológicasSalta.
It should be recorded that, in the incident referred to aboye,the types
ofthefollowingspecies,synonymisedbyGillies(loe.cit.),werealsolost:C.amoenus
Navás, C.rimatus Navás and C.venulosus Navás.
