Each volume provides up-to-date critical evaluations of the place and value of a single scholar’s work, in a manner both accessible to students and useful for instructors. Each volume includes a brief biography, analyses of key works, evaluations of criticisms and of overall impact on the field, and discussions of the work of later scholars who have appropriated or extended each key thinker’s approach. Critical engagement with each key thinker’s major works makes each volume a useful companion for the study of these important sources in the field. Aimed at the undergraduate and introductory graduate classrooms, the series aims to encapsulate and evaluate foundational contributions to the academic study of religion. This series is sponsored by, supported by the North American Association for the Study of Religion (NAASR), an affiliate of the International Association for the History of Religions. It is this understanding that makes Derrida’s writing what interviewer Jean Birnbaum calls a “writing of the inherited promise, of the safeguarded trace, and of entrusted responsibil- ity”—a “writing of survival [survivance]” (LLF 30). This writing is affirmative, “an unconditional affirmation of life,” and of “life more than life” (LLF 52), never more so than when, as is the case in this interview, it is haunted by an awaiting death. The following book, also haunted by Derrida’s death, affirms, is an affirmative response to his work. The book introduces Der- rida as a “key thinker” for the study of religion. I thank my family.
