Abstract American poet, poet laureate of South Dakota (2002-2015). This collection is composed of manuscripts, publications, correspondence, reviews, and writings by David Allan Evans Biographical Note Born in Sioux City, Iowa in 1940, David Allan Evans went to college on a football scholarship, and by the time he graduated, he was writing poems and short stories. He has degrees from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, the University of Iowa, and the University of Arkansas, where he got his MFA in creative writing. He has lived in Brookings, South Dakota since 1968, where he is a professor of English and Writer in Residence at South Dakota State University. He is the author of five books of poetry, and the author or editor of seven other books. In 1974 he was the first South Dakotan to receive a National Endowment for the Arts grant. He also has writing grants from the Bush Artist foundation in St. Paul, Minnesota, and the South Dakota Arts Council. His poems, short stories, and essays have been published in many magazines and journals and in over 60 anthologies, including Best Poems of 1969 (The Borestone Awards), Heartland II: Poets of the Midwest, The Norton Book of Sports, The Sporting Life, Imaging Home, Poetspeak, Motion: American Sports Poems, and Fathers. A number of his poems have been re-printed frequently in well-known sports literature anthologies as well as K-12 text books. He has been a Fulbright Scholar to China twice, once in Nanjing, China and once in Guangzhou. He has done residencies for the South Dakota Arts Council, Iowa Arts Council, and Wyoming Arts Council for over 25 years. He is listed in Contemporary Authors, International Authors and Writers Who's Who, and Who's Whos in America. Writings Contents Note This collection is composed of material related to activities in which Evans was involved in during his career, newspaper clippings of articles featuring Evans, reviews of books and poetry written by Evans, material collected and gathered by Evans over the course of his trips to China and the writings the occurred as a result of these trips, publications, poems and books authored or co-authored by Evans and published, Evans works as they appeared in anthologies, textbooks and other publications, reviews of Evans works as reviewed by his peers, and manuscripts of poems, essays, writings and talks. Included are files related to his work as Poet Laureate of South Dakota, articles related to his career as a writer, correspondence, diaries, research, copies of published books, clippings, journals, and manuscripts of early versions of Evans works that include notations by the author. Series 1. Activities. Composed of material related to activities in which Evans was involved in during his career. Included are files related to lectures, workshops, conferences, and festivals and writers-in the schools programs as well as material related to his work as Poet Laureate of South Dakota. Series 2. Articles About Evans. Composed mainly of newspaper clippings of articles featuring Evans. The articles relate to his career as a writer and focus on his accomplishments, readings, workshops, work as writer-in-residence, publications, and work as Poet Laureate of South Dakota. This material is arranged chronologically by year. The article title is noted in the folder description. Series 3. Book Reviews By Evans. Composed of reviews of books and poetry written by Evans and published in periodicals. Series 4. China. Composed of material collected and gathered by Evans over the course of his trips to China and the writings the occurred as a result of these trips. Included is correspondence, diaries, research and writings. Series 5. Collected Material. Composed of material found in the collection that the arranger did not find any direct relation to Evans. It is assumed that Evans collected this material because it related to his interests. Included are some poetry books, business cards, material related to Sioux City, Iowa, the National Federation of State Poetry Society, and South Dakota State University, as well as some various journals. Series 6. Correspondence. Composed of acceptance letters, letters from friends, fan mail, and letters of recommendation. Series 7. General. Composed of material related to his work in college, alumni reunions, honors and awards, biographical material and a file related to a creative writing scholarship established by Evans at South Dakota State University. Series 8. Periodicals: Essays, Articles, and Short Stories. Composed of publications containing essays, articles, and short stories written by Evans and published inPeriodicals: such as peer reviewed journals, magazines, and newspapers. Included is clippings, journals, and some correspondence. Series 9. Periodicals: Poetry. Composed of poems written by Evans and published inPeriodicals: such as peer reviewed journals, magazines, and newspapers. Included is clippings, journals, and some correspondence. Series 10. Published books. Composed of books authored or co-authored by Evans and published. Included are copies of the published book, correspondence, and book promotion material. Series 11. Reviews of Evans. Composed of reviews and criticism of Evans works as reviewed by his peers as found in newspapers, peer reviewed journals, and magazines. Included are reviews of his poetry and books. This material is arranged alphabetically by title of the article. Series 12. Works in anthologies, textbooks, and other publications. Composed of Evans works as they appeared in anthologies, textbooks and other publications. Included are short stories, essays, poems, and articles. This material is arranged alphabetically by title of the publication. Evans contribution is listed within the folder description with a page notation. Series 13. Writings. Composed of manuscripts of poems, essays, writings and talks. These manuscripts are early versions of Evans works and include notations by the author. Also included are a few clippings and two original musical scores, "Three poems for chorus," and "Looking out my window," composed by M. William Karlins with lyrics written by David Allan Evans.
