Wereceived66papersubmissionsfrom28countries,ofwhich18%areincludedin thisbook.Thepaperswereselectedbytheeventchairsandtheirselectionisbasedona number of criteria that include the classifications and comments provided by the Program Committee members, the session chairs’ assessment, and also the program chairs’ global view of all papers included in the technical program. The authors of selected papers were then invited to submit a revised and extended version of their papers having at least 30% innovative material. The purpose of the DATA 2017 was to bring together researchers, engineers, and practitioners interested in databases, big data, data mining, data management, data security, andotheraspectsofinformationsystemsandtechnologyinvolvingadvanced applications of data. The papers selected to be included in this book contribute to the understanding of relevant trends of current research on data science, technology, and applications, including four papers addressing the hot topic of business analytics, focusing on data mining, machine learning, and other approaches to understanding the semantics and formulating models that can be used to better solve problems in areas such as natural language understanding and e-Business; another five papers focused on data man- agement and quality, with applications as varied as rail automation, cultural heritage preservation, learning management systems, e-sports, and cloud storage; finally, three papers approached the important aspect of data security and privacy, including graph database versioning, avoiding access credentials theft using server side database credentials, and improving privacy using personalized anonymization of database query results.
