On a recent visit my 11-year-old nephew—who is a very logical and empirical
youngman—saidto me:“WhenI growup I am goingto be an engineer,justlike
you and Daddy!” To me that sounded like a reasonable wish, nevertheless I still
asked him why so. “I want to build Formula 1 racing cars like Daddy and then
writeaboutthemlikeyou.”Itisgoodtoheartoday’schildrenstillfindmotivation
andinspirationin the modernworld,wherewe take everythingfor granted.Many
awayfromengineeringmightsay:“Itworks,soIdon’tneedtoknowhoworwhy!”.
But,atthebaseofthis“everything”isengineeringandtheengineerswhotranslate
wishes, wants, and needsinto componentsand systemsthat end upin a seamless,
interconnectednetworkofdevices.Itissafetosaythatitisindeedtheengineers—
with their questioning minds, pragmatic approach and relentless tinkering—who
make most of the world move forward. With a PhD in physics, Dr. Maurizio di
PaoloEmilioisanengineerandonewithdeepunderstandingofthedataacquisition
world. Maurizio worked at the National Laboratory at Gran Sasso in Italy and
