Dance band arrangements from the CBS Collection II Call number: JPB 11‐23 Scope and Content Note This part of the CBS Collection consists of dance band music used by orchestras broadcast over the Columbia Broadcasting System (i.e. CBS Inc.). Arrangements of popular music from the areas of Hollywood films, Broadway theater, Tin Pan Alley, the Harlem Renaissance and operetta make up the bulk of the collection. The CBS library containing these arrangements was active from the late 1920's to the early 1970's, though most of the music represented here was composed and published in the thirty year span of 1915 ‐ 1945. These arrangements consist almost entirely of published sheet music for various sized dance bands. The most common orchestration of these arrangements includes parts for solo voice or vocal trio, 1 or 2 violins, 3 to 5 saxophones, 1 or 2 trumpets, 1 or 2 trombones, piano/leader, drums, guitar or banjo and bass, though there are many examples of smaller instrumentation. Occasionally, larger forces are called for, ranging up to chamber orchestra with full string sections and parts for all woodwinds. Some arrangements from the later years of the library are scored for concert or marching band. Annotation of the parts is minimal, other than the usual markings put in by players or librarians indicating cues and cuts. The final series of College songs, was originally a collection separate from the dance band arrangements, but they were received and processed with them. It has been discovered that the present series of college songs represents the small remaining fraction of a much larger collection, the remainder of which has been lost. The arrangements in this series are mostly for vocal ensemble, small orchestra or voice and piano. Organization The collection is organized into 5 series. They are: Series I: Single score arrangements Series II: Medleys Series III: Bound‐together arrangements Series IV: Oversize Series V: College songs Dance band arrangements from the CBS Collection III Call number: JPB 11‐23 Series Descriptions Series I: Single score arrangements, 1909‐1975 247 boxes Arrangement: Alphabetical by title.
