It has been claimed that the incessant repetition of the same few words is one of the top th
ten reasons that the children’s television series Teletubbiesconnects so well with children w
under the age of four. But once one turns four, the Teletubbieslose their naive charm and w
are replaced by other kinds of repetition, including graphic patterns, which can be designed
for wallpaper, fabric, tile, computer desktop backgrounds, wrapping paper . . . or simply for

Practically all designers have succumbed, at one point or another, to the temptation of co
designing a graphic pattern. Some have opted for simplicity, others for the obsessively te
baroque; some for monochromatic patterns and others for colorful explosions. But the gr
