Produced bythe Massachusetts Cultural Council Cultural Resources Directory A Listing ofArtists and Cultural Organizations Eligible to Participate in PASS, Event, Extended Event, Residency, andArtist-Teacher Partnership Programs About the MCC The mission ofthe Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) isto promote excellence, access, education, and diversity in the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences in orderto improve the quality of lifeforall Massa- chusetts residents and to contribute to the economic vitality of our communities. As a state agency, the MCC receives an annual state appropriation, as well as supportfrom the National En- dowmentforthe Arts, a federal agency. In addition, the MCC seeks other public and private funding for special initiatives. The MCC is governed bya board of 19 private citizens appointed bythe Governorfor staggered three-year terms. Board members representvarious regions ofthe state and have demonstrated distinguished service, creativity, and/or scholarship in the arts, humanities, or interpretive sciences. Purpose of the MCC's Education Programs For morethan twentyyears, the MCC has worked to improve the quality of cultural education throughoutthe Commonwealth. Education programs, available to grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12, are designed: ft to promotethe highest quality educational experiencesthat integratethe arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences fora complete education; l to encourage educatorsto take full advantage ofthe wealth of cultural resources in Massachusetts; and ft to build partnerships between schools and cultural resource providers, creating a comprehensive approach to cultural education. Education grant programs support innovative, participatory projectsthat stimulate children's imaginations, build critical and creative thinking skills, and broaden cultural experiences. The MCC has designed its pro- gramsto provide a progression of educational experiences, from introductory events orworkshops to multi- year, in-depth partnerships between schools and artists or organizations. The Education Reform Act of 1993 includesthe arts as one of seven core subjects to be taught in Massachu- setts schools. The Massachusetts Department of Education has developed the arts curriculum framework, "The Practice of Creating," which will be adopted in Fall 1995 bythe Board of Education. The MCC encourages schools and school districts to develop and/or reexamine their long-term vision oftheirarts in education pro- grams in light ofthese reform efforts. MassachusettsCulturalCouncil-CulturalResourcesDirectory 1 What is the Cultural Resources Directory? The CulturalResources Directoryprovides listings ofartists and cultural organizations, which have been reviewed and approved to participate in the PASS, Event & Residency, and Artist-Teacher Partnership pro- grams. The Directory\s designed to be a resourcefor educators, parent organizations (PTA/PTOs), local cultural councils, libraries, municipalities, neighborhood centers, civic organizations, and nonprofit presenting organizations. Funding Programs that Work with the Directory The PASS Program funds field trips by subsidizing the costofadmissionsforchildren to attend programs in the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences (including performances, educational tours, and exhibits). PASS is administered by local cultural councils. The PASS Program roster includes performing artists, pre- senters, museums, science/nature centers, and historical museums and societies. The fiscal year 1996 application deadline forthe PASS program is Monday, October 16, 1995. The fiscal year 1997 deadline forthe PASS program isTuesday, October 15, 1996. Applicants generally includeteachers, school administrators, parent organizations (PTA/PTOs), neighborhood centers, and civic and youth organiza- tions. See page 7 for more information aboutthe PASS Program. The Event & Residency Programs, administered bythe MCC, provide opportunitiesforschoolsto workwith professional artists on short- or long-term curriculum-related projects. Grants are offered in fourcategories of projects: Event, Extended Event, Residency, and Artist-Teacher Partnership. The Event & Residency Programs roster includes artists in the following disciplines: creative writing, dance, mediaarts, music, puppetry, storytelling, theater, and visual arts. There are two application deadlines (fall and spring) forthe Event & Residency Programs. The fiscal year 1996 deadlines forthe Event & Residency Programs are Wednesday, November 1, 1995 and Monday, April 1, 1996. Fiscal year 1997 deadlines have not been set. Please contactthe MCC for information on fiscal year 1997 deadlines. Applications may be submitted byteachers, school administrators, and/or parent organizations (PTA/PTOs). See pages 39-40 for more information aboutthe Event & Residency Programs. Please note thatthe Artist-Teacher partnership program will only be offered atthe November 1, 1995 deadline for projects occurring in Spring 1996. The MCC will then evaluate the program for its continued offering in fiscal year1997. Afterthe November1, 1995 deadline, please contactthe MCC for information regarding the Artist-Teacher Partnership Program. MassachusettsCulturalCouncil-CulturalResourcesDirectory How to Use The Cultural Resources DiREaoRy The CulturalResourcesDirectoryis divided intotwo sections: PASS and Event & Residency. Each section begins with ageneral overviewofthefunding program'scomponentsand instructionsonwhereto getaddi- tional information, followed by listings ofartistsand cultural organizations who areapprovedto work inthat program. Please notethateach program has itsownapplication, and eligibility requirements mayvary. Read through the CulturalResourcesDirectory, and decidewhichfunding program and artistororganization best meetthe needs ofyourschool orgroup. Individual listings inthis directoryare organized inthefollowing manner: Name ofthe artist orcultural organization. Eligibility (found in the Event & Residency section only) I Codes indicatethe categories ofthe Event & Residency Programs in which an artist/cultural organization is eligibleto participate. Thecodesareasfollows: EV= Event EX = Extended Event R = Residency P = PASS I Eligibilityto present PASS programs is included asacross reference in this section. I Artists/organizations who are eligible inthe Extended Eventor Residencycategoriesareeligibleto participate in the Artist-Teacher Partnership Program. Contact I This may bethe artist/organization directly oran agent. Grade Preference I Artists/organizations have specified the gradeswith whichtheywill work. I Artists/organizations which have expressed interest inworkingwith studentswith disabilities or bilingual students are indicated withthefollowing abbreviations: SP = Special Education B = Bilingual The MCC suggests thatschools discussthe particularneeds oftheirstudents directlywiththeartist. I Ifthe artist/organization has specified a particular language, this is listed. Descriptions are written bythe artists and cultural organizations, and they are solely responsibleforthe accuracy oftheircontent. Fees I Generally, thefees listed represent artists' base oraverage daily fees. Contactthe artist(s) directlyfor more specific information. Artist/Organization Review Process Directoryartists and organizations are reviewed by panels composed ofeducators and professional artists, humanists, and/or interpretive scientists. Applications are evaluated on the basis of excellence, quality ofedu- cational programs, and previous experience with students. Interested applicants are encouraged to contactthe MCC's Schools & Communities staff regarding application deadlines and procedures. Access Policy The MCC is committed to access not only as a matter ofstate and federal laws, butalso as a policy designed to encouragethe participation of all segments ofthe Commonwealth's population in MCC-funded programs. Funding priority will be given to projects serving communities with limited financial resources, a high percent- age of students ofcolor, students with disabilities, and/or limited accessto cultural resources. In addition, encouragement is given to projects thatcelebrate eitheran ethnic culture in the school orcommunity, or uti- lize artists of color, and/or utilize artists with disabilities.
