Commencement Speakers Dr. Clantha McCurdy, Senior Deputy Commissioner for Access and Student Financial Assistance, Representative of the Board of Higher Education | Dr. McCurdy oversees the Commonwealth’s Office of Student Financial Assistance. She is responsible for managing the states annual budget for scholarships, grants, loans, and tuition waivers and advises the Board of Higher Education on statewide financial aid policy and related student services initiatives. She also has chief responsibility for other statewide initiatives, including GEAR UP, the public higher education Student Advisory Council, and the Police Career Incentive Pay Program. With over thirty years of higher education experience, Dr. McCurdy represents the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on numerous state, regional, and national boards and committees. She is a leader in higher education, financial aid, and access policy, and continues to direct many of the Department of Higher Educations initiatives that serve to promote college access for students throughout the Commonwealth. Reverend Michael Hyde, Invocation and Benediction | Reverend Hyde has been a member of Community Baptist Church in Weymouth, Massachusetts since 2007, and was named Associate Pastor in 2011. Reverend Hyde graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and earned a Masters of Divinity in Church Planting from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He works as a middle school math teacher at West Bridgewater Middle Senior High School. Reverend Hyde and his wife, Rita, associate professor of English at Massasoit Community College, live in East Bridgewater and have one daughter, Ainsley. Dr. David Hirschy, Professor, Humanities and Emergent Technology, Faculty Speaker | Dr. David Hirschy has a Ph.D. in the eighteenth Century British novel—the cusp between the Enlightenment and the Romantics. He stays in the present by teaching American Literature and computer-aided drafting (CAD). An undergraduate physics major at Northeastern, his co-op job required drafting. When the Massasoit Engineering Department was shorthanded, he stepped in and taught Engineering Graphics. He initiated the CAD/design course at Brockton, continued when Canton merged, and added Revit (an architectural computer package). When he was director of Academic Computing he assisted Visual Arts in adding digital to wet art. Confronting teaching and software challenges has kept him modest. Working with CAD and tossing off Hamlet quotations, he sometimes generated puzzled looks from newcomers at department meetings who would wonder, “Am I in the right meeting?” Dr. David Hirschy is retiring after 40 years of teaching. Kathleen Purple, Student Speaker | Kathleen Purple grew up in Newburyport, Massachusetts and began her college career at Northern Essex Community College more than ten years ago. A liberal arts transfer major at Massasoit, she describes her experience at the college as transformative for her personal and educational growth. The support she received from various people during that time has been greatly appreciated. Kathleen will be transferring to Bridgewater State University in the fall, where she plans to study English with an English education concentration. Musical Performers Bailey Street Brass, Prelude and Processional | Formed in 2014, Bailey Street Brass members are all Brockton Symphony brass players, with four being section principals. Its musical catalog ranges from classical quintet publications to pop tunes, movie themes, and Canadian Brass Quintet arrangements. The group performs at a variety of local cultural, community, and personal events. Crystal Camp, Singer | Crystal started singing in church in 1998 and continued singing in high school. She has had many years of formal voice training, including six years of opera training. A business marketing major in the Honors program, Crystal has been elected to represent the student body as the 2017-2018 Student Trustee. Planning to graduate from Massasoit in Fall 2018, she hopes to transfer to Northeastern University. Peter Reardon, Bagpiper | Peter is a firefighter with the Brockton Fire Department and is the Band Manager and piper for the Brockton Firefighters Pipes and Drums. He has performed at Massasoit’s commencement ceremony for several years. Honorary Degree Ousamequin, Massasoit of the Wampanoag Accepted by Edith Andrews of the Aquinnah Wampanoag, representing the Wampanoag Though the Pilgrims called him Massasoit, a hereditary title meaning great leader, his name was Ousamequin. As Great Leader of the Pokanoket Wampanoag, Ousamequin held the allegiance of numerous chieftains and villages in the Wampanoag Confederation, stretching from Narragansett Bay east to Cape Cod, including most of modern-day southeastern Massachusetts, Marthas Vineyard, and Nantucket. His tribe ravaged by smallpox, Ousamequin sought an alliance with the English to help protect his people from the neighboring Narragansett. In 1621, he entered into a negotiated treaty of nonaggression and mutual defense with the English settlers that promised the Pilgrims the village that became Plymouth, Massachusetts and included an agreement that they would protect each other against attacks from third parties. He forged strong political ties with colonial leaders like John Carver, William Bradford, Edward Winslow, and Myles Standish. The peace between the Wampanoag and the English lasted for nearly forty years, only beginning to erode after his death. Ousamequin led the Wampanoag as Massasoit for approximately fifty years. Known for his diplomatic skill and desire for peace, he is recognized as a man of integrity, loyalty, and generosity. He was a humanitarian, offering solace, succor, and refuge to early settlers. Suffering from disease, malnutrition, exposure, and other problems, the English settlers found themselves ill-prepared for life in the New World. Without the aid of Ousamequin and his people, the colony would nearly certainly have failed in its early years. Massasoit Community College is the only public higher education institution in the Commonwealth to be named after a person rather than a location. As Massasoit’s namesake, the College recognizes him as part of our published history of the College and documents it annually in the college catalog. Our athletic teams bear the name Warriors in his honor. Ousamequin embodies peace and represents our regions rich history. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, it is the perfect time for us to honor our namesake. Edith Andrews of the Aquinnah Wampanoag, representing the Wampanoag, will accept the honorary degree in recognition of Ousamequin. Ms. Andrews is an active member of the Aquinnah Wampanoag community and she, along with several others, played an integral role in the recent re-interment of Ousamequin’s remains in Warren, Rhode Island. She serves on the Board of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe, on the Constitution and Election Committee, on the Culture and Historic Commission, and is a former Commissioner on Indian Affairs for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Ms. Andrews also serves on the Board of the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, the UMass Dartmouth Library Association, and is a Town Meeting Member for the town of Dartmouth, Massachusetts. She is a past Board member of the Boston Harbor Islands Association. She was formerly a student of the then-named Southeastern Massachusetts University, now UMass Dartmouth. Presidential Scholar Award Lais A. deCarvalho Costa, Presidential Scholar Award Recipient The Presidential Scholar award is presented to the graduating student with the highest GPA who has also completed the most credits, most full-time semesters, and most credits in the last semester at Massasoit Community College. Lais is a business administration transfer student with a 4.0 GPA. She will be transferring to Bridgewater State University in the fall, where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree in management with a concentration in marketing.
