This bi-annual event held under the umbrella of the Conference of Metallurgists provides a unique opportunity for researchers and materials engineers from academia, industry and government laboratories to discuss and share the latest advances in materials research and process development for aerospace applications. The formulation of this international symposium program would not be possible without the support of many colleagues in Canada and abroad. Particularly, the symposium organizers would like to express their genuine appreciation to the keynote speakers who have agreed to share their insights in this constantly evolving technology field. The technical program of the symposium features five sessions: High Temperature Alloy Development, Manufacturing Processes and Modeling, Protective Coatings, Application Challenges, and Repair Technologies and Light Weight Materials. While 26 presentations were made in these five sessions, only 18 papers are published in this proceedings volume due to the proprietary nature of the rest. These papers and the presentations, coming from countries worldwide (North America, Europe and Asia), deal with a wide range of technical issues, including solution treatment of high temperature alloys, manufacturing processes and modeling, advanced laser and linear friction welding techniques, diffusion barrier and high temperature coatings, oxidation behavior, advanced Ni-base superalloys for small gas turbines, mechanical properties and environmental evaluation, weldability of high temperature alloys, new high strength anti-friction alloy system, and powder metallurgy processing of light weight materials. The sequence of the papers appearing in this proceedings volume is the same as they were presented at the symposium. It is our hope that the readers will find many of the research findings presented in these papers are informative and useful. The editors of this proceedings volume are grateful for the full cooperation from the authors to ensure the quality and consistency of the published papers. They are especially indebted to Ms. Ronona Saunders of the Metallurgical Society of CIM for her unfailing support in both organizing the symposium and editing the manuscripts. We do hope that this proceedings volume remains as a valuable record of the research accomplishments in aerospace materials and manufacturing. L. Zhao, P. Wanjara, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada P. Patnaik and M. Elboujdaïni October 2010 Editors v Editors’ Biographies Linruo Zhao is a Senior Research Officer at the Institute for Aerospace Research of the National Research Council Canada. He received his B. Sc. (1982) and M. Sc. (1985) degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from Shanghai Jiao-Tong University, and his Ph.D. (1988) degree in Physical Metallurgy from Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials. After spending two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Zhao joined NRC as a Visiting Fellow in 1991 and subsequently became an Assistant Research Officer in 1993. During his 20+ year professional career, Dr. Zhao has contributed to a wide range of research topics from superplastic deformation of titanium alloys to the microstructure- property relationships of Ni-base superalloys and titanium aluminides, materials properties modeling, and erosion resistant and high-temperature coatings for gas turbines. He has authored and co-authored two patents and more than 100 refereed papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings. Since the incipience of the Aerospace Symposium of the Conference of Metallurgists in 2002, Dr. Zhao has participated in this bi-annual event as an author and session co-chair. Priti Wanjara is the Group Leader for Metallic Products Manufacturing at National Research Council Canada Institute for Aerospace Research (NRC Aerospace). She earned her B. Eng (1993) and Ph.D. (1999) degrees from McGill University in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. Prior to joining NRC Aerospace she worked with IVACO Rolling Mills (1997-2002) as a Product Development Metallurgist. Since joining NRC Aerospace in 2002, she closely manages several projects with industrial clients and academic collaborators on forging, welding and additive layer for manufacturing and/or repair of advanced materials. As Group Leader, she manages the multi-disciplinary activities of various research and technical officers, whilst aiming to develop scientific collaborations and/or business partnerships with industry, academia and other government organizations to promote novel joining and forming technologies to various industrial sectors, including aerospace, automotive and nuclear. Dr. Wanjara is the co-author of over 90 refereed papers and 50 NRC reports. As a member of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum since 1993, she has actively participated for many years in the Annual Conference of Metallurgists as technical program co-chairman, session chair and symposium chair. In 2010, Dr. Wanjara was nominated to the position of 3rd Vice President of the Metallurgical Society of CIM. She has received national awards including the ASM Canada Council Brian Ives Lectureship in 2008 and the Brimacombe Award from the Metallurgical Society of CIM in 2009. P.C. Patnaik’s current responsibilities as Director of the Structures & Materials Performance Laboratory (SMPL), one of the five Laboratories of NRC Aerospace, include the management of the research and development and testing evaluation of aerospace structures, materials/coatings for aircraft engines, spacecraft applications and aeroacoustics & structural dynamics, NDE and airworthiness certification related to various collaborative projects with Canadian industries and other Canadian Government Departments. Dr. Patnaik received his bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering from India, and his Master’s and Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering from McMaster University in Canada in 1984.
