Both the practicing radiologist faced with the reality of daily film reading and the senior resident taking the oral board examination are usually unaware of the underlying disease when they are presented with a specific finding for which they must suggest a differential diagnosis and a rational diagnostic approach. This book offers differential diagnoses for a broad spectrum of radiographic patterns, not only in conventional radiography but also in ultrasound and computed tomography. Added to these lists of differential possibilities are descriptions of the specific imaging findings to be expected for each diagnostic entity as well as differential points to aid the reader in arriving at a precise diagnosis. A wealth of illustrations is provided to point out the often subtle differences in appearance among conditions that can produce a similar overall radiographic pattern. Extensive cross referencing is provided to limit duplication and to permit the reader to find various radiographic manifestations of the same condition. I must stress that this book in no way intends to supplant the current excellent textbooks in general radiology and imaging subspecialties. Rather, it is designed to complement these works by providing a handy reference for practicing radiologists and residents faced with the daily challenge of interpreting radiographic examinations. ix
