Theundercurrentofdispleasurehas alwaysexistedinunionwiththepurposeoftheChronicle thatis,tobeashowcaseforcampuscreativity. Foronething, whoistodecidetheconstitutionofcreativity?Whilewe understandthatthesourceofthegrumblingisourtendencyto publishstaffwork,weassertthatthepeoplemostconcerned withthesuccessofthemagazine,thestaff,aretalentedpeople. Wewouldliketopublishmoretalentedpeople,whetheryou arestaffmembersornot. Theproblem,however,isthatwedo notreceiveenoughqualitysubmissionstofilloutanissue withoutusingstaffwork. Grumblingcannotbeavoidedwhen inevitablerejectionaffectssomeofourcontributors. The problemisthatwe,inkeepingwithourpurpose,cannotin goodfaithpublishinferiorliteratureinordertoceasethe grumbling. Thisisaworldof"survivalofthefittest,"bothin businessandinpublishing,itselfaliterarybusiness. Ifyou havesubmittedtotheChronicleandhavebeenrejected,rest assureditwasnotfromlackofattentiononourpart,butthat forsomereasonyourcontributiondidnotfittheneedsofthe magazine. Weimploreyoutokeeptrying,becausewegreatly appreciateyourinterest. Thegreaternumberofgrumblers,however,arethose whohavenotanddonotsubmittotheChronicle,andyetstill airtheirunfoundedgripesaboutourselectionprocess. To thesepeopleweask: Whatistheproblem? Ifyouhavenot submittedyourwork,thenyouarenotonlycontributingto ourlowsubmissionproblem,youalsohavenobasisfor complaint. Ifwereceive100submissions,andtheonesjudged tobemostfitarestaffmembers,thenthatisareflectiononthe qualityofsubmissionsasawhole,and notanindicationofan "inbred"system. Weabsolutelydonotdiscriminatebetween staffand non-staff,andourselectionsystemisanonymous,so nonamesareinvolved. TheChronicleisstillyourmagazine. Itdoesnot matterwhoputsittogether,orwhoprintsit,thecontentisstill yours. Ifyouchoosetomakeadifference,andyouthinkyour workisgood,send itin. Ifyoudon't,youhaveonlyyourself toblamefornotgettingin.
