Foreword Inthecanonofclassiccivilengineeringtextbooks, therearefewthatenjoytheprivilegeofmultiple editions.Thatthistextbookhasnowreachedits eighthisahugetributetothesuccessivedrafting committeessincethatfirsteditionin1963.Granted, therewere26editionsofRankine’sManualofCivil Engineeringtohumblethatclaim,butthatbeganits journeyin1862,not1963. IhavekeptthesecondeditionofCivilEngineering Proceduresincemyundergraduateyearsat Edinburgh–a(large)pocket-sizedhandbookthat wasawelcomerelieffromtheoryandgaveaglimpse ofreal-worldpracticetonaiveaspiringengineers. Itsfullvaluewastoberealisedlaterwhenithelped navigatetheearlyencounterswithcontract documentsandconstructionmanagement. Theeightheditionwouldbescarcelyrecognisableto theengineersofthe1960sand1970s.Inupholding theprinciplesofthatfirstedition–‘todescribethe establishedorganisationandmethodsofworkingin theindustry’–thesuccessiveeditionsofthisguide havereflectedtheevolvingstatusofwhatis consideredtobe‘established’civilengineering procedure. Intervalsbetweensuccessiveeditionshavesteadily reducedsince1996andthepaceofchangingpractice isunlikelytoslowdown,thenaturalconsequenceof avibrantprofession.Thislatesteditionbringsthe seriesfirmlyuptodate.
