This data summary provides selected tabular summaries ofdata from the U.S. decennial census. The dataset used in this analysis is the Census 2000 Summary File #1 (SF-1) produced bythe U.S. Census Bureau. Summary File #1 was released on a state-by-state flow basis in summer2001, with California's version ofSF-1 released August 8, 2001. Summary File #1 includes atotal of286 tables. There are 171 population tables (identified with a "P") and 56 housing tables (identified with an "H") that provide data down to the census block level. There are an additional 59 population tables (identified with a"PCT")thatprovide data down to the census tract level. Census 2000 SF-1 provides a detailed look at 100-percent count data including: population by detailed age and sex, population for Asian and Hispanic/Latino sub-groups, numberof households, relationship to the head ofhousehold (orthe "householder"), "group quarters" population (those living in group settings), housing units, households bytenure (owner-occupied or renter-occupied), average household size and average family size. The geographic focus forthis report isthe nine-county San Francisco Bay Area, includingthe counties ofAlameda, Contra Costa, Marin,Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma. Data is reported at the region and county level. This data summary includes one table in the body ofthe report and several sets ofappendix tables. Appendices A through J contain a set of13 demographic and housing "profile"tables forthe Bay Area and each ofthe nine Bay Area counties. These 13 tables contain data from 32 ofthe 286 tables in SF-1. These datawere chosen to complementthe information contained in MTC Data Summary #2 (based on Demographic Profile #1 data.) Appendix K and L contain a set of9 demographic and housingtables forMTC's 34 Superdistrict system, atthe Census 2000 5-percent Public Use MicrodataAreas (PUMAs), and atthe Census 2000 1-percent Public Use MicrodataAreas (PUMAs). There are 54 ofthe 5-percent PUMAs and 12 ofthe 1-percentPUMAs in the BayArea. The 5-percentPUMAs have a minimum population of100,000 persons. The 1-percentPUMAs have a minimum population of400,000 persons. These PUMA-level tabulations ofSF-1 dataare intendedto complementthe detailed analysis ofPUMS datasetsthatare expected in 2002/03. Maps showingthe superdistricts and PUMAs are included as Figures 1 through 3. This report, MTC Data Summary#3, is thethird in a series ofCensus 2000 reports produced by MTC staffforgeneral use. Data Summary#1, completed October2001, is based onthe Public Law94-171 (PL 94-171) data product released bythe Census Bureau in March 2001. Data Summary#2, completed November 2001, is based onthe Demographic Profile #1 dataproductreleased bythe Census Bureau in May 2001. Thesethree MTC Data Summaries are all based on the 100 percent, or "short form" data from Census 2000. 1 DISCUSSION OF RESULTS II. A. Population by Race and Ethnicity (Tables analyzedin thissection include Table 1, andAppendix TablesA.l, A.4andA.5). Race and ethnicity data was previously available in the Public Law 94-171 data product, and the Demographic Profile #1 data product. These two data products are summarized in MTC Data Summary #1 and #2, respectively. What is new with the Summary File #1 is detailed data on Hispanic/Latino and Asian sub- groups. A regional comparison ofdetailed Hispanic/Latino and Asian population by sub-group, 1980 to 2000, is summarized in Table 1. A re-cap ofthe Bay Area population by race and ethnicity is included in Appendix Table A.l. The Bay Area Hispanic/Latino population increased by 46.3 percent between 1990 and 2000, from 899 thousand to 1,315 thousand persons. Persons ofMexican ethnicity represent the largest share ofHispanic/Latinos, increasing from 67.5 percent ofLatinos in 1990 to 70.2 percent of Latinos in 2000. Interestingly, the Central American share ofLatinos decreased from 11.6 percent in 1990 to 7.6 percent in 2000. And similarly, the South American share ofLatinos decreased from 3.7 percent in 1990 to 2.5 percent by 2000. The largest apparent increase in Latinos is for"all other Hispanic or Latino, not elsewhere classified." Detailed Hispanic/Latino population data forthe Bay Area is included as Table A.5, derived from the SF-1 table PCT-11. (The PCT-1 1 data is available down to the census tract level.) A comparison ofthe detailed Asian sub-groups is also provided in Table 1. The fastest growing Asian groups in the Bay Area are Asian Indians (+187 percent, 1990 to 200), Vietnamese (+73 percent, 1990 to 2000), Thai (+54 percent, 1990 to 2000), and Hmong (+1175 percent, 1990 to 2000, based on Hmong population increasing from 68 persons in 1990 to 867 persons by 2000.) The apparent decline in the BayArea Japanese population between 1990 and 2000 is shown in Table 1: from 79.2 thousand in 1990 (9 percent ofthe Asian population) to 74.5 thousand in 2000 (6 percent ofthe Asian population). In the 1990 Census, persons were ableto report one race only. In the 2000 Census, persons were able to report one-or-more races. So, the data from 1990 and 2000 are not strictlycomparable because ofthese significant differences in data reporting and datacollection. Detailed dataonthe Asian population, reporting one Asian categoryonly (Table PCT-5), reporting Asian only, but one-or-more Asian categories (Table PCT-6), and reporting Asian alone or in combination with otherraces (Table PCT-7), is reported in Table A.4 forthe Bay Area. From thistable we can showthe 74.5 thousand Japanese represents persons who self- reported Japanese race, only; the 80.9 thousand persons who reported Japanese only, orJapanese plus anotherAsian category; andthe 103.6 thousand persons who reported Japanese only, or Japanese in combination with any otherAsian orotherrace category. The 103,650 Japanese can be thoughtofas a"tally" ofBayAreapersons whoticked the Japanese race category on their Census 2000 form. 2
