The University Wake Forest University is characterized by its devotion to liberal learning and professional preparation for men and women, its strong sense of community and fellowship, anditsencouragementoffreeinquiryandexpression. Founded in 1834 by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, the school opened its doors on February 3 as Wake Forest Institute, with Samuel Wait as principal. It was located in the forest of Wake County, North Carolina, on the plantationofCalvinJones,nearwhichthevillageofWakeForestlaterdeveloped. Recharteredin 1838 asWake Forest College, it is one ofthe oldestinstitutions of higherlearninginthe state. Itwas exclusivelya college ofliberalartsformenuntil 1894, when the School ofLawwas established. The SchoolofMedicine, foundedin 1902, offered a two-year medical program until 1941. In that year, the school was movedfromthetownofWakeForesttoWinston-Salem,becameassociatedwiththe North Carolina Baptist Hospital, and was renamed the Bowman Gray School of Medicineinhonorofthebenefactorwhomadepossiblethemoveandexpansiontoa fullfour-yearprogram.In1942,WakeForestadmittedwomenasregularundergradu- atestudents. A School of Business Administration was established in 1948, and for over two decadesofferedanundergraduateprogramofstudyinbusiness. In 1969theunder- graduateschoolwassucceededbytheDepartmentofBusinessandAccountancyand theDepartmentofEconomicsinWakeForestCollege; atthesametimetheBabcock Graduate School of Management was established. In 1980 the undergraduate pro- gram inbusiness and accountancywas reconstituted as the School ofBusiness and Accountancy. The Division of Graduate Studies was established in 1961. It is now organized as the Graduate School andencompasses advancedworkinthe arts and sciences on both the Reynolda and Hawthorne campuses in Winston-Salem. The summersessionwasinauguratedin 1921. In 1946, the trustees ofWake Forest College and the Baptist State Convention of NorthCarolinaacceptedaproposalbytheZ.SmithReynoldsFoundationtorelocate the non-medical divisions of the College to Winston-Salem, where the School of Medicinewasalreadyestablished.ThelateCharlesH.Babcockandhiswife,thelate MaryReynoldsBabcock,contributedacampussite,andbuildingfundswerereceived frommanysources.Between1952and1956,thefirstfourteenbuildingswereerected inGeorgianstyleonthenewWinston-Salemcampus.In 1956theCollegemovedall operations, leaving the 122-year-old campus in the town of Wake Forest to the SoutheasternBaptistTheologicalSeminary. The decade that followed was the College's most expansive, and in 1967, its augmentedcharacterwasrecognizedbythechangeinnametoWakeForestUniver- sity. Today, enrollmentin all schools ofthe Universitystands atover5,000. Gover- nanceremainsinthehandsoftheBoardofTrustees,anddevelopmentforeachofthe sixschoolsoftheUniversityisaugmentedbyBoardsofVisitorsfortheundergraduate schools as well as the Graduate School, the School of Law, the Babcock Graduate School of Management, and the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, and by the Advisory Council for the School of Business and Accountancy.
