A. 4. 11, fol. 62a. Stan. 571,6–576, 3. Boethius: De Consolationę Philosophiae TRANSLATED BY JOHN WALTON CANON OF OSENEY EDITED WITH INTRODUCTION, NOTES AND GLOSSARY BY MARK SCIENCE, M.A., Ph.D. LONDON: PUBLISHED FOR THE EARLY ENGLISH TEXT SOCIETY BY HUMPHREY MILFORD, OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS AMEN CORNER, E.C. 4. 1927. . Original Series, No.170. PRINTED INGREATBRITAIN BYRICHARDCLAY& Sons,LIMITED, BUNGAT,SUFFOLK, PR 1119 E58 no.170 PREFACE ! In the present edition of John Walton's translation of Boethius based on the Lincoln Cathedral MS. A, 4, 11, an effort has been made to produce an accuratetext. Lackof the originalmanuscript of the translator even ofadirectrecensionfromithasmadeemendation a necessary where scribal errors have crept in, but all emendations have been indicted, and, where possible, have the support of the Latin original, of Chaucer from whose prose translation Walton often borrowed slavishly, and ofreadings fromother MSS. The collations, for the most part, give variant readings ratherthan variant spellings. Some time afterI had worked out the filiation of the MSS. my attention was drawn to K. Schümmer's similar work on Walton's Boethius, Untersuchung des Handschriftenverhältnisses und Probe eines kritischen Textes (Bonner Studien zur englischen Philologie, Heft VI). Hebased his investigations on extracts containing about one-third of the whole translation, and collatedfrom 14 MSS.and the printed edition. That our conclusions do not differ widely helps to strengthen both. I should like to express my warmest thanks to the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln Cathedral who permittedtheir manuscript to be kept at Sheffield wliile I transcribed it. To Canon R. M. Woclley, who drew my attention to this.MS. I am very grateful. I am also indebted to the Librarians of Trinity College, Oxford (J. R. Weaver, M.A.), Balliol Coll. (A. W. Pickard-Cambridge, M.A.), and Christ Church(H. W. Blunt,M.A.),fortheirkindnessinputtingMSS. atmy disposal, as well as to the Librarians of the Bodleian and Cambridge University, and the Curator of the Fitzwilliam Museum . For his courtesy in permitting me the use of theLibrary of St. John's College (Cambridge) while I examined the MS. I am grateful to Mr. C. W. Previté-Orton. My thanks are also due to the Trustees of the Bishop
