Preface
The present book includes extended and revised versions of a set of selected papers
fromthe14thInternationalJointConferenceonBiomedicalEngineeringSystemsand
Technologies(BIOSTEC2021),exceptionallyheldasanonlineevent,duetoCOVID-19,
duringFebruary11–13,2021.
BIOSTEC is composed of co-located conferences, each specialized in a differ-
ent knowledge area, namely BIODEVICES, BIOIMAGING, BIOINFORMATICS,
BIOSIGNALSandHEALTHINF.
BIOSTEC 2021 received 265 paper submissions from authors in 52 countries, of
which4.9%wereincludedinthisbook.
Thepaperswereselectedbytheeventchairsandtheirselectionisbasedonanum-
ber of criteria that include the classifications and comments provided by the Program
Committeemembers,thesessionchairs’assessmentandalsotheprogramchairs’global
view of all papers included in the technical program. The authors of selected papers
weretheninvitedtosubmitrevisedandextendedversionoftheirpapershavingatleast
30%innovativematerial.
ThepurposeofBIOSTECistobringtogetherresearchersandpractitioners,including
engineers, biologists, health professionals and informatics/computer scientists, inter-
ested in both theoretical advances and applications of information systems, artificial
intelligence, signal processing, electronics and other engineering tools in knowledge
areasrelatedtobiologyandmedicine.
The papers selected tobeincluded inthisbook contribute totheunderstanding of
relevanttrendsofcurrentresearchonbiomedicalengineeringsystemsandtechnologies,
includingpatternrecognitionandmachinelearning,applicationofhealthinformaticsin
clinical cases, evaluation and use of healthcare IT,medical signal acquisition, analysis
and processing, data mining and data analysis, decision support systems, e-health, e-
healthapplications,mobiletechnologiesforhealthcareapplicationsandmedicaldevices
design.
