Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct ofa sexual nature may constitute sexual harassment, especially when submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly aterm orcondition ofthe measure ofastudent's performance. Wheneverthere is such an abuseofauthorityorneglectofresponsibility, the administration will take promptand correctiveaction consistentwith appropriatedisciplineprovisions ofstateregulations and law. SEXUALHARASSMENTGRIEVANCE PROCEDURE Shouldastudentfeelhe/shehasbeensexuallyharassed,he/sheshouldcontacteithertheimmediatesupervisoroftheallegedperpetrator orthe appropriate university official. AthensStateUniversityhasinplaceanappropriategrievanceprocedureforsexualharassmentandothergrievancesshouldastudentfeel itnecessarytofile. ATHENS STATE UNIVERSITY MISSION STATEMENT AthensStateUniversity isabaccalaureatedegreegrantinginstitutionofferingcourseworkatthejuniorandseniorlevel. GOVERNANCE AthensStateUniversityisabaccalaureatedegreegrantinginstitutionoperatingunderthecontroloftheAlabamaStateBoardof Education. ThepresidentisthechiefexecutiveofficeroftheUniversityandisdirectlyresponsibletotheStateBoardofEducation throughtheChancellorofPostsecondaryEducation. HISTORY Athens State University is both the oldest and the youngest institution ofhigher education in Alabama's state educational system.TheUniversitywasfoundedin 1822bylocalcitizenswhopurchasedfiveacresofland,erectedabuilding,andbeganAthens FemaleAcademy.Ownershipoftheschoolwastransferredin 1842totheTennesseeConferenceoftheMethodistChurch. Withthe birthoftheNorthAlabamaConferenceoftheMethodistChurch in 1870,theCollegecameunderthejurisdictionofthatbody. On May 10, 1974, theBoardofTrusteesrequested fromtheNorth AlabamaConferenceofthe UnitedMethodistChurchthat theCollegeseekaffiliationwiththeStateofAlabama.Theconference,atitsannualmeetinginJune, 1974,gavetheBoardofTrustees thispermissionand authorizedthetransferoftheCollegetotheStateofAlabama. In June 1975, the Collegewas accepted bythe Alabama State Board ofEducation subject to the appropriation ofoperating fundsbytheAlabamaLegislature. Laterthatyear,theLegislatureappropriated fundsfortheoperationoftheCollegetoservethe graduatesofstatejunior,community,andtechnicalcolleges/institutes. The institution's name has changed several times in its history, following adjustments in purpose and governance. Athens Female Academy, upon transferto theTennessee Conference ofthe Methodist Church in 1842, became Athens Female Institute. Thenin 1889afterhavingbeentransferredtothenewlyformedNorthAlabamaconference,theCollegewasknownasAthensFemale College. In 1931,theCollegebecamecoeducationalandwasknownasAthensCollege. In 1975,whentheinstitutionbecamepartof the state educational system, it was renamed Athens State College, marking the initiation ofan era ofincreased opportunity for service. In 1998,abillwaspassedbythelegislaturetorenametheCollegetoAthensStateUniversity. Thelonghistoryofservice bythe University isthe foundation upon which the future ofthe University rests. BUILDINGS Brown Hall BrownHallservesastheadministrativebuilding. ItcontainstheofficesforthePresident,theDeanofAcademicAffairs,theDeanof ExternalAffairs/DirectorofAlumniAffairsandtheSpecialAssistanttotheDeanofAcademicAffairs. Chasteen Hall Chasteen Hall servesasaclassroombuilding. It is locatedoneblockwestofthemain campusatthecornerofClintonand Hobbs Streets. Carter Physical Education Center Thegymnasium,facultyoffices, andclassroomsare locatedintheCarterPhysical EducationCenter. Classroom Building TheClassroom Building containsclassrooms, the Limestone County Video ConferenceCenter, student lounge, and theOffice of StudentFinancialServices. Founders Hall Founders Hall containsthe Business Office, Dean ofFinancial AffairsOffice, DirectorofPhysical Plant Office, the Readingand Math Clinic, the Writing Center, classrooms, MIS Department, and faculty and staffoffices for the School ofBusiness and the SchoolofArtsandSciences. Library TheAthensStateUniversity LibraryislocatedatthecomerofPryorStreetand Elkton Street. Anofficeforthemediaspecialistis alsolocatedinthelibrarybuilding. McCain Hall McCainHallcontains officesfortheSchoolofEducationandScienceinMotion(chemistryandbiology). McCandless Hall McCandlessHallcontainsasmalltheater,facultyofficesfortheSchool ofArtsandSciences,andclassrooms.
