As in most developmental processes, much has changed in each of the volumes. For one thing, this edition has two authors. Each of us brings to the volume complementary strengths, yet we each share the view that children are unique developmental beings and that good practice with children should be guided by sound theory and research. This edition, as past editions, has been improved by comments of students and colleagues who have used the book in undergraduate and graduate child study courses. Most notably, the following people have either read chapters or extended our understanding of issues discussed in this book: John Evans, Lee Galda, David Lancy, Peter Smith, Brian Sutton-Smith. They, of course, are not responsible for limitations in this work. Our work on this book has been supported by the Institute for Behavioral Research (University of Georgia), the School of Education of the University of Cardiff, and a grant from the W T Grant Foundation. vii Applied Child Study A Developmental Approach
