AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION San Francisco, CA August 9–12 AS ua gn u F sr ta 9n –c 1i 2s c o , C A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF APA Welcome to We are excited to have you with us in San Francisco at APA 2018—the premier meeting of psychologists, and future psychologists, from the United States, Canada, and around the world. APA 2018 promises to be exciting and informative, featuring scores of brilliant psychologists presenting on the hottest topics in our discipline. As always, APA serves as the unifying force in psychology. Our convention will kick off with a keynote presentation by acclaimed public interest attorney Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative and professor of clinical law at New York University Law School. A fierce advocate for the powerless in the criminal justice system, Stevenson has been honored with the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship and the Olof Palme Prize for international human rights. At this session, I will present the 2018 Award for Outstanding Lifetime Contributions to Psychology to Margaret Beale Spencer, PhD, for her pioneering work on the effects of ethnicity, gender, and race on youth and adolescent development. Dr. Spencer has forged new paths in the cognitive and socioemotional aspects of development, particularly among young people of color and those from low-resource family backgrounds. APA 2018 will spotlight APA’s Citizen Psychologists, individuals who, through prolonged engagement in significant community activities, have contributed to improving others’ lives. The creation of this designation has been the centerpiece of my presidential year, and I look forward to hearing from many of them as they describe their contributions and make recommendations to others who aspire to become citizen psychologists. This year’s program features a number of “thought leader” sessions, presented by some of the most innovative and creative thinkers in our field today. These include Adam Alter, PhD, on the topic “Irresistible: Why We Can’t Escape Our Screens”; Lisa A. Feldman Barrett, PhD, on “Emotions: Separating Fact From Fiction”; Peter H. Ditto, PhD, on “Hot Cognition: Motivated Reasoning About Health, Morality, Politics, and Science”; and Ali Mattu, PhD, on “Secrets of a YouTube Psychologist: Giving Away Psychology in the Digital Age.” Of course, no APA convention would be complete without some exciting evening activities after a long day of learning. On Thursday, join your colleagues for APA Baseball Night with the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park, and on Friday, APA will host “A San Francisco Experience,” an evening featuring California wines, hors d’oeuvres, locally sourced cheeses, and charcuterie. Space is limited at both events, so register early. Dive into this program and immerse yourself in the thought leader sessions, skill-building workshops, posters, and other activities that make the convention such a remarkable time. While APA 2018 will be a whirlwind for us all, please say hello if you see me dashing from session to session. And have a great and edifying APA 2018.
