Executive Director-Treasurer Dear North Carolina Baptists, Scripturetells usthatthe church isthe bride ofChrist, and our Lord uses local churches to bewitnessesfor His gloryastheyseekto advancethe Gospel. Therefore, the Baptist State Convention ofNorth Carolinatakesseriouslyits mission toservechurchesthroughout North Carolina astheyequip believersfor Kingdom ministry intheircommunity, in their state and aroundtheworld. Ourdesire isto comealongsidechurchesand be a resource in anyway possible. This Convention has a long historyofhelping mobilize North Carolina Baptists in ways that helpchurches make a greater impactforthe Gospel. Every ministryoutreach ofthe Convention is only made possiblebecause North Carolina Baptistscontinueto befaithful in theirgivingto missions. I am grateful to ourchurchesfor maintainingsuch a high level of involvement in missions and missionsgiving. Ourstate continuesto changeyearafteryear. More peoplefrom otherstates and countries are comingto live here, and North Carolina is one ofthefastestgrowingstates in population in the country. The state is more diversethan everbefore. OnethirdofNorth Carolina's population are ethnic minorities.The citiescontinueto be placeswherewe are striving to be more intentional in ourevangelism efforts. ThisAnnual Report representstheworkofthisConvention. It isfreelyprovidedto each supporting church as evidenceofthe life-changing powerofthe Gospel andthe accountabilitytothosewhom weserve. In this reportarestoriesofstudents andyouth on mission forthe LordJesusChristandstories ofnewchurch plantsthroughoutthe state. This report also helpstell abouttheworkGod isdoingthrough local and international mission partnerships, multicultural ministryand mission camps,justto name a fewofthe many ministries ofthis Convention. I askthatyou continueto prayforus asweseekto, byGod'sgrace, becomethestrongest force in the historyofthis Convention for reaching peoplewiththe message ofthe Gospel ofthe LordJesusChrist.Weare prayingwith youforhearts all acrossthisstateto be awakenedtothetruth oftheGospel andtothe beautyofa personal relationshipwith ourSavior. In Hisservice, Milton A. Hollifield, Jr. Executive Director-Treasurer COMMITTeE ON MEMORIALS Flake Mason, chairoftheCommitteeon Memorials, challengedthe committeeto consider longevity, a positive influence and ministryto North Carolina Baptistsastheyselectedthe individualsforwhomthe2009Annual ofthe BaptistStateConvention would be dedicated. Usingthose guidelines, thefollowing individualswereselected: Cockburn, Samuel Herbert, Winston-Salem-Agreatcommitmenttosharingthe Gospel ledCockburn and hiswifeVioletto serve as missionaries inArgentina and Spain.Also an educator, Cockburn taughtatWake Forest Universityand Campbell College, where he foundedthe LatinAmerican studiesprogram. Cockburn pastored manychurches in Canada andthe United States. Gatwood, Charles, Cary-Gatwood ledthe church musicdepartmentofthe Baptist State Conventionfrom 1967-1987. Atalented musician, Gatwood enjoyed musicand he enjoyed serving people. During histimewiththestateconvention heformed and directed a men's choir, which grewto becomethe North Carolina BaptistSingersand Orchestra. Gatwood alsoserved several churchesas music minister. Jones, Jr., Crate Harrison, Durham-Joneswasthe authorofthree booksand a local church pastor. Heserved at Rolesville Baptist in Raleigh andAngierAvenue Baptist in Durham. Joneswas active in the local Baptistassociation and regularlycontributed Sunday School lessonstothe Biblical Recorder. McCotter, George, Lillington-An active layman, McCotterdevoted much ofhistimeto servingthe local church. Heserved multipletermsonthe Board ofDirectorsfor Meredith College, and hisfamilyestablishedthe McCotter First FamilyScholarship Fund at Meredith. McCotterwasvery involved in meetingwith North Carolina Baptistswhowantedtofocus on Bold MissionThrust and laity involvementwithinthe Baptist State Convention. Parker, Jr., Andrew Leroy, Greensboro-For morethan 32years, Parkerpastored Friendly Avenue BaptistChurch andwas named pastoremerituswhen he retired in 1982. Heserved as presidentofthe BaptistStateConventionfrom 1958-1959and also held numerousde- nominational leadership positionsonthe local, state and national level. Sherman, Cecil, Asheville-Shermanwas known asa courageous leader, onewhostood upforthecivil rights movement. He pastored First BaptistChurch in Ashevillefor20years, andthechurch hasparticipated inthefounding and nurtureofat leasta dozen churches intheAshevillecommunity. Shermanwasalsoactive inthe BuncombeAssociation and thestateconvention.
