INTRODUCTION Recognized as one of the premier institutions of the country, the University of Jammu, accredited as ‘A’ grade University by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) India, came into existence in 1969 vide Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act 1969 following bifurcation of the erstwhile University of Jammu and Kashmir by an Ordinance promulgated by the Governor on September 5, 1969 and was subsequently adopted as an Act of the State Legislature. His Excellency the Governor of the J&K State is the Chancellor and Hon’ble Chief Minister is the Pro-Chancellor of the University. Apart from its main campus in Jammu, the University has eleven other campuses, out of which eight campuses located at Kathua, Bhaderwah, Poonch, Udhampur, Ramnagar, Kishtwar, Reasi and Doda have been made functional. Teaching-learning and research are carried out by thirty four departments, fifteen centres and 158 affiliated colleges, awarding degrees in around forty programmes at the postgraduate and undergraduate level. The main new campus at Bahu Wali Rakh with an area of 118.78 acres houses the Teaching Departments, Centres, Administration Block, Examination Wing ,College Development Council, Department of Students Welfare, Directorate of Distance Education, Department of Lifelong Learning, Central Library, Computer Centre, Health Centre, Guest House, Post Office, J&K Bank, Book shop, Transit accommodation, Gymnasium, Hostels, Cafeteria and Canteens, Residential quarters and many other facilities. The second campus of the University( the old campus), located a distance of 4 km from the main campus, is spread over 10.5 acres and currently houses a hostel for boys and residential quarters for teaching and non-teaching employees. The University is truly treading the path of growth which is reflected in the developments taken place in the past few years. Introduction of new courses and self financing programmes, establishment of new campuses, increase in the number of affiliated colleges, use of Information Communication Technology (ICT), impetus to research, collaborations and infrastructural developments are the initiatives taken. This report enlists and presents the activities and initiatives undertaken in the various teaching departments, directorates, centres, campuses and other offices of the University of Jammu during the period 2011-12. 1 UNIVERSITY AT A GLANCE (2011-12) Student Enrolment 23,792 students applied for various courses offered in the University teaching departments, l out of which 3,296 candidates granted admission. 16,346 students admitted in the various courses offered in the Directorate of Distance Education. l 554 students enrolled in the various courses offered in the other campuses. l 73,265 students enrolled in the affiliated colleges. l 136 students admitted for Ph.D programme. l 169 students admitted for M.Phil programme. l Student Achievement 76 Ph.D degrees awarded. l 143 M.Phil degrees awarded. l 172 students qualified NET/JRF. l 9 fellows being provided “CSIR fellowship”. l 82 UGC fellowships being awarded for research. l 21 students being provided “Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowships for SC/ST(UGC)”. l 5 students being provided “Research fellowship for meritorious students(UGC)”. l 75 scholars provided University Research Scholarships for Ph.D Programme. l 23 scholars provided University Research Scholarships for M.Phil programme. l 4 scholars provided Merit/Merit-cum-means Scholarship. l 6 scholars provided Inspire Fellowship. l 1 scholar provided PG Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child. l Human Resources 7 Professors, 3 Associate Professors and 27 Assistant Professors appointed including l appointments under Career Advancement Scheme. 8 officials appointed. l 8 Professors superannuated. l 4 officers superannuated. l 8 officials superannuated. l Academics/Research 13 new research projects sanctioned by various funding agencies. l 45 ongoing research projects being funded by various funding agencies. l 11 research projects successfully completed during this period. l 2 8 departments receiving assistance by University Grants Commission(UGC) under Special l Assistance Programme(SAP)-Business School, Commerce, Physics, Political Science, Botany, Environmental Science, Chemistry and Education. 4 departments receiving assistance by DST (FIST) - Biotechnology, Chemistry, Geology and l Statistics. 14 books, 394 research papers, 140 abstracts, and 28 chapters in books published by the faculty l members of the University. 5 faculty members received awards/honours for contributions in their respective fields. l 142 faculty members attended 472 seminars/workshops/conferences organized by various l Universities/ Institutions at National/International level. The University organized 29 seminars/workshops/ conferences. l 134 visiting faculty/guest speakers delivered lectures and/or held interactive sessions with l the students of the University. Additional courses introduced in 6 affiliated colleges. l Infrastructural Development New infrastructure projects initiated during this period include : Construction of second floor on the existing building of The Business School. l Construction of additional accommodation (2nd floor) over existing library of Department of l Physics & Electronics. Extension of three storied building of Social Sciences Block. l Repair and renovation of Nehru Hall Boys Hostel (Phase-II). l Additional work for covering of Terraces with Poly Carbonate Sheets in Boys Hostel(Baba Jitto). l Renovation of Library, Faculty Rooms and Classrooms of Department of Geography. l Construction of additional classrooms in Department of Computer Science and IT . l Construction of additional accommodation(2nd floor) in Department of Mathematics. l Renovation of Department of Library & Information Sciences. l Remodelling of Library of Department of Law. l Construction of First floor on existing building of Department of Statistics. l Construction of Herbarium Museum in Department of Botany. l Construction of damaged boundary wall in different stretches on river Tawi side, New University l Campus. Construction of damaged boundary wall near police post adjoining Vice Chancellors lodge. l Construction of additional accommodation (Phase-I) in Department of Geology. l Construction of additional accommodation on First floor of existing building of Environmental l Sciences Connecting of Main Road from Fountain to Administration Block(Phase-II). l Construction of Playground at Bhaderwah Campus. l 3 Construction of Phase-I of four storied laboratory complex of Department of Chemistry. l Providing and fixing of pre-fabricated structures at Udhampur Campus. l Training and Development Programmes 4 General Orientation courses and 5 Refresher courses conducted by the Academic Staff College l for the faculty members of the Universities and its affiliated colleges, attended by 209 participants (106 locals and 103 non-locals). Central Facilities The Central library acquired 3,107 new volumes. The Central library’s collection now stands at l 4,22,504 with around 465 students/scholars/teachers visiting the library per day. 759 boarders reside in the various University hostels. l Sports and Co-curricular Achievements University organized 33 Inter-Collegiate Sports competitions/tournaments. l University of Jammu won third prize in the All India Inter-University Korfball Championship, l 2011. University won silver medal in EPEE individual in the All India Inter-University Fencing l Championship 2012.
