In theirdiachronic work, such leading representatives of Finno-Ugric linguistics as Paavo Ravila and Erkki Itkonen constantly relied on the use of analogy. Terho Itkonen, the quintessentialscholaroftheFinnishlanguage,madeuseofandexplicatedanal- ogybothinhissynchronicandinhisdiachronicwork.Thus,whenanalogyfell intodisreputeintheoreticallinguisticsduringthelastdecadesofthe20thcen- tury,Iknewthatitwasamistake.Duringthosedarkyears,RaimoAnttilawas theforemostproponentofanalogyinlinguistics.Thisbookisdedicatedtohim.
