Baseband Communication • The term baseband is used to designate the band of frequencies of the signal ddeelliivveerreedd bbyy tthhee ssoouurrccee oorr tthhee iinnppuutt ttrraannssdduucceerr. • In telephony, the baseband is the audio band (band of voice signals) of 0 to 4kHz. •• IInn tteelleevviissiioonn, tthhee bbaasseebbaanndd iiss tthhee vviiddeeoo bbaanndd ooccccuuppyyiinngg 00 ttoo 44.55 MMHHzz. • For digital data or PCM using bipolar signaling at a rate of Rb pulses per second, the baseband is 0 to Rb Hz. • In baseband communication, baseband signals are transmitted without modulation, that is, without any shift in the range of frequencies of the signal. • BBeeccaauussee tthhee bbaasseebbaanndd ssiiggnnaallss hhaavvee ssiizzaabbllee ppoowweerr aatt llooww ffrreeqquueenncciieess, tthheeyy ccaannnnoott be transmitted over a radio link but are suitable for transmission over a pair of wires, coaxial cables, or optical fibers. •• LLooccaall tteelleepphhoonnee ccoommmmuunniiccaattiioonn, sshhoorrtt--hhaauull ppuullssee--ccooddee mmoodduullaattiioonn ((PPCCMM)) ((bbeettwweeeenn two exchanges), and long- distance PCM over optical fibers use baseband communication.
