We have all been touched by cancer. In 2013, nearly 144,800 Californians will be diagnosed with cancer and nearly 55,485 will die of the disease. You can make a tremendous difference by becoming a Legislative Ambassador and demanding that your elected representatives get involved in the fight against cancer by: • Increasing funding for cancer research and prevention • Increasing tobacco regulation and taxation • Supporting patient navigator programs for underserved communities • Supporting cancer‑fighting programs Volunteer Legislative Ambassador Description A volunteer Legislative Ambassador is an American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network volunteer that works with, and provides support to, legislative advocacy staff and leadership as well as providing support for local, state and federal advocacy activities in California. Volunteer Legislative Ambassadors play an integral part in helping the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network's goal to make cancer a top national priority with elected officials. Responsibilities • Responding to and sharing American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Action Alerts • Recruiting new Legislative Ambassadors and/or new American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network members • Participating in ambassador trainings and conference calls when possible • Attending several American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and/or American Cancer Society events per year to showcase advocacy accomplishments, recruit advocates, and to engage the public in our local advocacy efforts • Participating in at least one legislative visit per year • Sending a letter of introduction to your elected officials • Sending letters to the editor and op‑ed (opinion pieces) to local media as needed • Showcase advocacy accomplishments, recruit advocates, and engage the public in our local advocacy activities at external events whenever possible No legislative advocacy experience needed!
