It was thenthat 15 studentsweregraduated fromthe Mansfield Classical Seminary. Since that historical event, thousands of people have earned membership in Mansfield's Alumni Association. Thispublicationcontainsinformationabout20,000 graduates of our school. The profile of the group is interesting. There are people from the class of 1908 who earnedadiplomafromtheMansfieldStateNormalSchool. Therearethosewhoearnedtheirdegreesduringthe65yearsthatMansfieldwasknownasMansfield State Teachers College. Many ofthem are teachers or retired from the profession ofteaching. Therearethosewhoearnedtheirdegreessince 1960,whenMansfieldbeganofferingavariety ofdegree programs. Their occupations reflect the diversity ofthe subjects they studied. Explore the directory andyou'llfind ouraliunnireside in49 ofthe 50 United States. Some live in Canada, Central and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Butno matterwhat theiroccupationorwhere they reside, theyare importantto Mansfield University. Severalyearslater,in 1862, theinstitutionwasdesignatedaStateNormal School for the training of teachers by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. By the turn of the century enrollment had grown to over 400 students. In 1927 Mansfield changed again and became the first school in Pennsylvania to be designated a StateTeachers College,authorizedbythe StateBoard ofEducationto grant Bachelor ofSciencedegrees inelementaryandsecondaryeducation,music, andhomeeconomics. In 1960the word Teachers was dropped from the titleand Mansfieldbecame Mansfield StateCollege, amulti- purpose institution offering a broad range of curricula. Finally, on July 1, 1983, Mansfield University came into being as a unit ofthe Pennsylvania State System ofHigher Education. Today the 185 acre campus, with 36 buildings and 175 faculty members, serves approximately 3200 undergraduate and graduate students.
