ISPRS Book Series 10 ISPRS Book Series in Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences Book Series Editor: Paul Aplin Volume 10 A d v Advances in Geo-Spatial Information Science a n c e s i n Advances in Geo-Spatial Information Science presents recent advances that have G e been made regarding fundamental issues of geo-spatial information science (space and o time, spatial analysis, uncertainty modeling and geo-visualization), and new scientific and - S technological research initiatives for geo-spatial information science (such as spatial data p mining, mobile data modeling and location-based services). The book contains selected a t and revised papers presented at the joint International Conference on Theory, Data Han- ia l dling and Modelling in GeoSpatial Information Science (Hong Kong, 26-28 May 2010), I n and brings together three related international academic communities: spatial information f o science, spatial data handling, and modeling geographic systems. r m Advances in Geo-Spatial Information Science will be particularly useful for academics a t and professionals interested in spatial information science, spatial data handling and mod- io eling of geographic systems. n S c i e n c e Advances in Geo-Spatial Information Science S L h e i e, sG &o o Ld ec uh ni gld , Editors: Wenzhong Shi, Michael F. The event was jointlyorganizedbyTechnicalCommissiononTheoryandConceptsofSpatialInformationScience of the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), Commission on Geographical Information Science and Commission on Modelling Geographical Systems of the InternationalGeographicalUnion(IGU). The ISPRS Technical Commission on Theory and Concepts of Spatial Information Science has been organizing its symposium every four years alternately with the ISPRS Congress and is one of the major events of ISPRS.The Commission on Geographical Information Science of IGUhasbeenorganizingitsbiennialinternationalresearchforumforGeographicalInformation Science,InternationalSymposiumonSpatialDataHandling(SDH),since1984andthefirstone washeldinZurich.TheIGUCommissiononModelingGeographicalSystemshasbeenorganizing itsconferencesovertheyearsonthemodelingandanalysisofgeographicaldataandsystemsin differentpartsoftheworld. ThisJointInternationalConference, forthefirsttime, broughttogetherthescholarsfromthree relatedinternationalcommunities: spatialinformationsciencefromISPRS,spatialdatahanding from IGU and modeling geographic systems from IGU. The event was thus provided an open platform for a cross-community and cross-discipline academic discussion. The latest advances in geo-spatial information science were reported through keynote speeches, technical sessions, postersandstudentforum. This book documented the outcome of the Joint International Conference and is composed of seven sections: Introduction, Modeling Space andTime, SpatialAnalysis and Data Mining, Uncertainty Modeling, Mobile Data Modeling, Geo-Visualization, Location-Based Computing andService.Thesecover(a)therecentadvancesregardingthefundamentalissuesofgeo-spatial informationscience:spaceandtime,spatialanalysis,uncertaintymodelingandgeo-visualization, and(b)thenewscientificandtechnologicalresearchinitiativesforgeo-spatialinformationscience, suchasspatialdatamining,mobiledatamodelingandlocation-basedservices. vii TThhiiss ppaaggee iinntteennttiioonnaallllyy lleefftt bbllaannkk AdvancesinGeo-SpatialInformationScience–Shi,Goodchild,Lees&Leung(eds) ©2012Taylor&FrancisGroup,London,ISBN978-0-415-62093-2 Acknowledgement WewouldliketothankthefinancialsupportoftheFacultyofConstructionandLandUse,TheHong KongPolytechnicUniversity;ChungChiCollegeandtheFacultyofSocialScience,TheChinese University of Hong Kong; Department of Geography, Hong Kong Baptist University; and the StateKeyLaboratoryofResourcesandEnvironmentInformationSystem,InstituteofGeographic, SciencesandNaturalResourcesResearch,ChineseAcademyofSciencesinorganizingtheJoint International Conference onTheory, Data Handling and Modelling in GeoSpatial Information SciencethatwasheldattheHongKongPolytechnicUniversity,HongKong,on26–28May2010. ix
