In the 2003 issue ofy4 NearMiss, The University ofSouth
Carohna Spartanburg proudly presents the works ofyoung artists
and writers from high schools across the upstate. Their poetry,
fiction, andvisual art demonstrate notonlycreative talent, butalso
wisdom, honesty, courage, and humor.
Each piece of work selected for publication underwent
rigorous editorial scrutiny and was chosen from among thousands
ofsubmissions. Congratulations to each studentwhose talent and
hardwork are showcased in this edition.
Congratulations are also due elsewhere: much ofthe credit
for the level ofquality ofthe work appearing inA NearMiss must
be attributed to the teachers who instruct, motivate, and inspire
their gifted students. We thank them for their dedication and
enthusiasm.

Grief
Hesat outside fordays
shovelingdirt,
spoonful afterspoonful,
into his gapingmouth.
Itbegan after the ceremony,
when everyonewas inside
mourningovercakes and coffee.
At first, Iwas the onlywitness
as he fell onto his knees
ruininghis rented suit.
With tremblinghands,
he caressed the earth
she had cultivated.
Thespoon that came from
hisleftpocket
was small
with ahard plastichandle
shaped like abear.
He began toweep as he
plunged thespoon
into the topsoil.
Speechlessly, Iwatched him
begin to takeherback.
