A. W. Banfield, M.B.C., and Rev. J. L. Macintyre, C.M.S., have decided to publish a Nupe Grammar and Vocabulary. Having been associated with the Nupe Province since the earliest days of British Administration, I desire to place on record the unsparing devotion and arduous labours performed by the authors of this book in the interests of the Nupe people, their language, life, and customs. After many years' residence amongst the Nupe people, they have become thoroughly conversant with their habit of thought and have obtained a real insight into the lives of these interesting and intelligent people. Few people have a greater knowledge of Nupe histor}^ This work now to be published is the result of strenuous and earnest effort in the study of this difficult language. The measure of success in a work of this nature will not be gauged by the number of copies of the book purchased, but in the careers of young Political officers and others, Avho have the honour to serve their country in the Nupe Province of Nigeria.
