Since Volume 1 we have seen a huge growth in the popularity of this series, which has been demonstrated not only in the sales of the books, but also in the support from the CG community and contributing artists. We had over a staggering 1100 art submissions for this fourth volume in the series – we that the artists give to us are priceless, and I never fail to be moved could have very easily created a book at least fi ve times the size of the by the sheer warmth of the CG community; the way in which groups one you are holding right now with images all of the quality that you will of artists from all corners of the globe will come together to create see as you make your way through the following pages. something beautiful, such as this fourth volume in our DAM series. The hours overwhelmed and feel honored by the sight of an entire room literally fi lled wall to wall with the most gorgeous collection of work you could hope to see in one place at one time. Just fi fty of those images are here today in this collection, making this just a tiny taste of what the CG community has to offer. The articles that you’ll fi nd as you move through the book have been created by artists, for artists. We are the mere compilers of the stunning artwork and write-ups you’re about to see and read, and we produce these books to give the artists within these pages the exposure and merit that they deserve, for they are each in their own right a Master of their digital art. And it is on this note that I’d like to thank each and every contributor to this volume of the DAM series: the artists, the translators, the guest judges, the friends and families who have supported the artists through their late nights and weekends at their computers, as well as the publishers who have made Volume 4 possible. Finally, we thank you, the reader, for investing in the DAM series; we hope you’ll thoroughly enjoy this latest offering and that it may lead to the creation of your very own digital art masterpiece. If you need to contact us, please email: [email protected], or write to: 3DTotal.com Ltd, 1 Shaw Street, 3rd Floor, Worcester, WR1 3QQ, United Kingdom viii Foreword I remember it like it was yesterday: my fi rst year at university, I had no idea about my future, and then I stumbled across the mind-blowing works of an illustrator whilst shuffl ing through the pages of an art magazine. From that very moment, I realized what I wanted to do with my future. The images adorning the pages of the magazine changed the fl ow of my life; my passion for digital art had © Emrah ELMASLI started to develop. I discovered that the possibilities and things that could be achieved were almost endless – and without any further thinking, I leapt into the “endless” world of digital art ... Afterfi rst deciding to be an illustrator, I would never have guessed that one day someone would spread countless numbers of awesome artworks in front of me and ask me to choose the very best of them. So when the 3DTotal staff asked me to help them out with the judging process of this fourth volume of the Digital Art Masters series, I was really honored, but at the same time I had the nagging feeling that I was about to get myself into a really tough situation … When the judging day fi nally arrived, we laid out all of the prints on the ground, and I realized that I was right about my initial concerns – we were choosing the best of the best! As an artist, it’s not diffi cult © Emrah ELMASLI © Emrah ELMASLI for me to draw or to paint, but it soon turned out that it was pretty tough for me to choose from the awesome The book you’re holding right now is the fruit of many tough moments, plenty of sweat, artworks that have been created by so many freakishly battles of indecision and many, many cups of coffee. talented artists – all who share the same passion as me. The world of digital art is so endless that it’s very hard not to get lost in it. Someone who is just beginning needs to fi gure out what to do fi rst, but the internet has almost turned into a tutorial garbage dump. So at this point, the Digital Art Masters series takes its place on the shelf of “must have” classic art books for artists and art enthusiasts alike. This fourth volume of the series is a particular reference to where digital art has come to today. I’m pretty sure that most people who gaze at the pages of this book will have similar feelings to mine when I fi rst looked at that art magazine many years back. Perhaps there will even be some confused students, curious art lovers and even potential artists who haven’t yet discovered their talents but will somehow obtain this book, and whilst looking through the images and articles they will unconsciously be opening a fresh page in a new chapter of their lives. I congratulate the 3DTotal team and Focal Press for getting this book together and for supporting the world of digital art. Through these efforts, many new artists will reveal and push the limits of digital art. So, if your coffee is ready, prepare yourself to turn the fi rst page of this new visual adventure.
