Over the last few yearstremendousprogresshasbeenmadeinthisarea.Ontheonehandimportantnew insightshavebeenobtainedresultinginmore(cid:223)exibilityandnewrepresentations.Onthe other hand a number of techniques have come to maturity, yielding robust algorithms deliveringgoodresultsonrealimagedata.Moreoversupportingtechnologies(cid:150)suchas digitalcameras,computers,diskstorage,andvisualizationdevices(cid:150)havemadethings possiblethatwereinfeasiblejustafewyearsago. Opening the workshop was Paul Debevec(cid:146)s invited presentation on image-based modeling, rendering, andlighting.Hepresentedanumberoftechniquesforusingdigital imagesofrealscenestocreate3Dmodels,virtualcameramoves,andrealisticcomputer animations.Theremainderoftheworkshopwasdividedintothreesessions:Computation andAlgorithms,VisualSceneRepresentations, andExtendedEnvironments.Aftereach sessiontherewasapaneldiscussionthatincludedallspeakers.Thesepaneldiscussions were organized by Bill Triggs, Marc Pollefeys, and Tomas Pajdla respectively, who introducedthetopicsandmoderatedthediscussion.
