EXTREME BURGER EXPERIENCE JOINS EUGENE’S
DOWNTOWN DINING SCENE By William Kennedy
T
hese days it seems the coolest place for Portland eateries to
expand to is downtown Eugene. Joining Voodoo Doughnut,
Townshend's Tea and Sizzle Pie is Portland’s Killer Burger —
the kind of joint that puts bacon on everything. And that tells
you what kind of place you’re dealing with: This is food-chal-
lenge territory; not for the faint of heart, the timid eater, or Morrissey
fans; the kind of place that calls its doubles “fatty,” small portions “girlie,”
veggie options “metro” and their happy hour “crazy hour.” This is hang-
over food for a growing boy or anyone who’s hungry (and carnivorous
enough) to eat like one.
Killer Burger’s signature is arguably the Peanut-Butter-Pickle-Bacon
Burger (sweet and savory bacon, smoky house sauce, mayo, grilled onion
and pickle). The peanut butter is house made. Also on the menu are exotic
flavors like the Black Molly (smoky house sauce, grilled onion, Philly
steak, provolone, brined green chilies, mayo and bacon). All burgers are
served with fries.
But Ryan Reyna, manager of Killer Burger’s Eugene location, says
what truly sets Killer Burger apart is the focus on employees. “If you’re
happy eating a burger it’s going to taste better than when you’re sad,”
Reyna jokes, continuing: “Our whole philosophy is if the employees are
happy then the customers are happy. If you come in on any given day and
look back into the kitchen — we’re going to be laughing.”
This ethos spills over into Killer Burger’s fun, rock ‘n’ roll interior —
an appropriate neighbor to Sizzle Pie’s gritty and urban aesthetic. To go
along with your burgers, you can get soft drinks, local beers — including
the delicious, Killer Burger-brewed Bloodshed Red — and mixed drinks.
There’s even a Kid’s Killer Basket for the little ones in your life.
So how’re the burgers? I admit I was skeptical about the Peanut-
Butter-Pickle-Bacon Burger. I love all those things alone, but together —
on a burger — it just doesn’t seem right. But when in Rome, order what
the locals are eating, and soon, placed before me was a compact burger
on a soft bun that dissolved into a delicious mix of grease, creamy peanut
butter and bacon.
While I don’t think anyone lacking the metabolism of a hummingbird
should eat that burger very often (without consulting a medical
professional), I’m a convert. The juicy beef and interplay of creamy, salty
peanut butter and crunchy bacon and pickle alongside grilled onion was
like an erotic hot-tub mouth party — but less creepy.
In the little over two months since opening, Reyna says Killer Burger’s
business has been brisk in Eugene’s revitalized downtown, especially for
the weekend after-hours crowd spilling from nearby bars and clubs. ■
Killer Burger is located at 50 W. Broadway and its hours are Monday through Thursday 11 am to 10

really a true farmhouse-style cider,” Gould says, “and it’s
closer to traditional French cider than English pub cider,
which can be overly sweet.”
So what does a wild-crafted cider taste like? That
depends entirely on the type of cider you’re trying, and
there are quite a few.
WildCraft’s flagship dry cider is delightful and classic,
not overly sweet, with a pleasant finish. Because WildCraft
doesn’t backsweeten, or add sugar at the end of the
fermentation process, “the whole thing comes alive,” Kelly
says. “Your palette becomes drawn to these subtleties of
taste.”
This goes for all of WildCraft’s ciders, from its wild
plum small-batch cider, made with freeze-pressed
Mirabelle plums, to its tart cherry cider, which uses
Willamette Valley cherries fermented alongside apples.
But WildCraft’s perries, or pear ciders, are what really
shine. Its Pioneer Perry glows with rich, warm and hearty
flavors, not as sharp as a traditional apple cider. Kelly says
the pears come from a select handful of pioneer orchards.
The elderberry perry, besides being fun to say, holds a
unique taste, with the sweet fruitiness of Cottage Grove
elderberries balancing the satisfying wholesomeness of the
fermented pear.
WildCraft pairs its ciders with a tasteful, albeit higher-
priced, menu, and Kelly says most of the menu items
incorporate cider into the recipe. The cheese plate is
exquisite: three wedges of cheese accompanied by local
honey, fruit, walnuts and membrillo — a sweet, thick jelly.
Other offerings from Chef Ryk Francisco include
savory truffle mac and cheese, housemade crepes with
veggie, cheese or meat fillings and brochettes served with
chewy flatbread.
Kelly says since opening the cider house in late
November of last year, he’s seen clientele of every age and
background enter the historic brick building on Lincoln
Street near the Whiteaker neighborhood. With handcrafted,
salvaged redwood tables and an old-time ambiance that’s
hard to fake, WildCraft is well on its way to becoming a
community staple.
And for the future? Kelly is dreaming big — rooftop
dining with a spiral staircase. “On summer nights, it would
be so awesome,” he says, smiling. “We’re working on it.”

hands it out through the window, wrapped in a white paper
bag. The torta is a hearty meal in itself, spicy and savory,
perfect to grab on the run in the afternoon or evening.
Besides tortas, Xoco also specializes in pambazos,
which are similar to tortas but soaked in a spicy red sauce,
and homemade drinks such as horchata, a sweet rice milk.
Xoco’s tostadas are particularly tasty, a potent combination
of chicken, bacon and chipotle. They also make their
own salsa and, this winter, champurrado (Mexican hot
chocolate) is on the menu.
It’s a family-run food cart, so relatives are usually
nearby. Gonzalez’s brother helps with the cooking
and Rachel Poplack, the other co-owner of Xoco and
Gonzalez’s partner, is never too far away, though she is
often busy taking care of their two children. “We’d been
