Cover Photo: Drake University Sheslow Auditorium 2 The Iowa Music Teacher President’s message — After our long and very cold Iowa winter, Spring is finally “in the air.” And by the time you read this, the flowers will be blooming and the past months will have begun to fade to distant memory. I hope you and your students have all made it through the ice and snow safely. I personally sprained a knee by slipping on black ice. It was nothing too terribly serious. But then I wondered what if that (or something worse) had happened to a student of mine on my property. Would I be insured? What if I’m sued? So, please make sure that all of your policies are up to date! Also, remember that MTNA offers a lot of support along these lines. If you are interested, check out the info at mtna.org As I write this, there is nothing new to report on the FCC case against MTNA. We have been told to sit tight. I will be in touch with local association presidents as soon as I hear something. In one of my recent email messages to the membership, I asked for volunteers to step up and take on board positions. I did receive some positive responses, but in case you didn’t see the message, here it is again: I would like to use this opportunity to (again) ask you to consider volunteering for a board position. IMTA/MTNA offers you many benefits. I have been highlighting some of these in my previous bulletins. But it goes beyond what it does for you. It does so much more for your students. The experiences that they gain from auditions, competitions, festivals, and by affording their teachers continuing education are all invaluable. The NCTM program ensures parents quality music education. But all of this cannot be covered by your dues alone. Volunteerism is essential for the success and survival of our group. And I am truly honored and blessed to have the support of some 30 members who are currently on the board. They all do tireless work for you. However, since I have been on the board (now in my 10th year) they are pretty much (with few exceptions) the same 30 people, who are simply rotating around in positions. And we are getting tired. It is imperative to infuse the board with new "blood and fresh ideas.” So please consider donating your time and experience. Whether it is as Vice-President for Membership or just chairing the MTNA Performance Woodwind competition; your help is essential. Here are some positions, which will become vacant in June: Vice-President for Membership Vice-President for Local Associations Secretary Finally, I hope you are all gearing up and getting excited for our annual conference, to be held June 1-3 at Drake University in Des Moines. Check out the exciting schedule, which Dr. Nicholas Roth has put together for us! A huge thank you goes out to him and the local Des Moines teachers who I know have been incredibly helpful in the preparation for this conference. So, make sure to plan on coming to Des Moines in June. I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. And I promise, it will be warmer then it is now! Alan Huckleberry The Iowa Music Teacher 3 2014 IMTA State Conference: An Invitation Once again, the Des Moines Music Teachers Association and I would like to invite you to the 2014 IMTA State Conference which is being held at Drake University, June 1-3. Excitement is mounting as preparations continue in full force! Be sure to check the enclosed conference schedule for details on presenter topics, masterclasses, performances and other activities. Lori Sims has an unforgettable solo recital program in store for us, and she will also offer a unique approach to improving practice habits in her session entitled "Practicing Toward Successful Performance." Plans for the Iowa All-Stars Concert are in full swing as well, featuring pianists from all points of the state in a marvelously eclectic program that will surely please. We are also happy to announce the return of two sessions that have not appeared on the conference roster for a couple years, namely the Teacher Forum, moderated by Des Moines teachers Sue Hudson, Diane Smith & Cyndie Caruth, and Certification Testing with newly appointed Certification Chair, Elaina Burns.
