Before the Magnuson-Stevens Act, “it was like the Wild West out there.” DeFazio says he had hoped to work on a bill on a bipartisan basis, but Hastings, who is chair of the House Natural Resources Committee, introduced his own Republican bill. He says the act has room for improvement, and he FOR YOUR HEALTH hopes to develop a “meaningful Democratic alternative.” Pew says the Hastings bill, which is up for a hearing in the House Feb. 4, would also reduce the public’s access to fisheries data, including data collected with taxpayer dollars, exempt fishery management from broader environmental review and result in overfishing. — Camilla Mortensen eugeneweekly.com • January 30, 2014 9 NEWS ACTIVIST LERT Carol Stabile, director of CSWS, says Heldman and PROFESSORS TO SPEAK Dirks have become key players in the movement, and they • “The Role of Transit in Our Community Vision” want to “make sure that these sorts of crimes, which his- is the topic at City Club of Eugene at noon Friday, ON ANTI-RAPE MOVEMENT torically have been a problem, are actually reckoned with.” Jan. 31, at the Downtown Athletic Club, 10th and Willamette.
