Angeles.AtStetsonhehasservedontheFacultySenate,teachesintheElderhostelProgram,andworksinboththe
DiscoveryProgramforundeclaredstudentsandtheUniversityExperienceProgramforfirst-yearstudents.In1995,he
wonStetson'sHandAwardforExcellenceinResearch.

Medallion
ThePresident'sMedallion,wornatallofficialacademicoccasions,wascastfortheinaugurationofPresident
JohnE.Johnsin1969.Themedallion,castinsilver,istheuniversitysealembracedbyawreathoflaurel.
The Stetson Colors
TheStetsoncolors,greenandwhite,wereadoptedaboutthesametimeastheseal.Atthefirstcommencement
in1893,thestagewasdecoratedingreenandwhite.Itisbelievedthatthecolorswerechosenfromtherichgreenof
theorangetreesandthepurewhiteoftheorangeblossoms,amagnificentsightinthespringthroughoutFlorida's
greatcitrusbelt.Thecolorwhiterepresentspurity,andgreensignifiesgrowth.
Academic Attire
Thetraditionalpageantryotanacademicprocession,suchastheonethatopenstoday'scommencement
exercises,isoneoftheimpressivespectaclesofourtime.Thearrayofhandsomegownsandvividlycoloredhoods
wornbythefacultyandotherofficersoftheuniversityarethesymbolsofscholarlyattainment.Theearliest
illustrationsofgownswornatOxfordUniversityinEnglandsomewhatresemblecassockswornbyEnglishteachers
whofoundgooduseforthehood,orcowl,asprotectionagainstweather.TheAmericansystemofacademicheraldry
indicatesthelevelofadegree,thefieldofstudyinwhichitwasearned,andtheinstitutionbywhichitwasgranted.
TlieAmericanmortarboard,deri\'edfromthesoftOxfordcap,isblack.Itstassel,forholdersofthebachelor's
andmaster'sdegrees,isusuallyblack,althoughgoldtasselsmaybewornbyholdersofdoctoraldegreesandheadsof
institutions.Thetasseliswornontherightsideofthecapbyundergraduates,ontheleftbyholdersofbachelor'sand
higherdegrees.
Itisthehoodthatprovidesacademicregaliaitscolorandoffersthemostinformationaboutitswearer.Thesilk
liningofthehoodbearsthecolor,orcolors,ofthedegree-grantingcollegeoruniversity;itsvelvetfacingrevealsthe
colorassignedtoeachareaofstudy.Thedoctor'sgownmaybearvelvettrimmingonthefrontandsleeves,suchas
darkblueforDoctorsofPhilosophy.Afewinstitutions,mostlyoverseasbutsomeinthiscountry,authorizethe
wearingofcoloredrobes,departingfromthetraditionalblackandbrightlydisplayingtheofficialcolorsofthe
university.

theinstitutionwaschangedfromDeLandCollegetoJohnB.StetsonUniversity.Itfirstappearedonauniversity
catalogin1891.Thedrawingwasbyanartist-iq-residenceandapprovedbyPresidentForbes,HenryDeLandand
JohnB.Stetson,aswellasbytheBoardofTrustees.TheLatinMotto,"ProDeoetVeritate," istranslated"ForGod
andTruth."TheLamp,signifyingtheLightofTruth,restsontheBookofWisdom.
Mace
Maceswereoriginallywarinstrumentsusedfororganizingmayhem,butfromthe13thcenturyhavebeen
carriedbythesergeant-at-armsofeducationalandcorporateentities.InEuropeanandolderAmericanuniversities,
themacesymbolizesthedignityandauthorityofthepresidentandtheBoardofTrustees.
Stetson'smace,designedbyEpiscopalianCanonEdwardNasonWestottheCathedralChurchofSt.Johnthe

"Stetson'smaceisdesignedsothatanyonecouldeasilyplacetheuniversity'sgeographiclocationand

Heritage
StetsonUniversity,Florida'sfirstprivateuniversity,wasfoundedin1883byHenryA.DeLand,aNewYork
philanthropist,asDeLandAcademy.In1887,theLegislatureoftheStateofFloridaenactedtheCharterofDeLand
Universityasanindependentandautonomousinstitutionofhigherlearning.Theuniversitynamewaschangedin
1889tohonorJohnB.Stetson,thenationallyknownhatmanufacturerwhogavegenerouslyofhistimeandmeans
toadvancethequalityandreputationoftheinstitution,andwhoserved,withMr.DeLandandothers,asafounding
trusteeoftheuniversity.
Stetson'sfirstpresident.Dr.JohnF.Forbes,clearlydescribedthecommitmenttoteaching,whichhasbeena
hallmarkoftheuniversitythroughoutitshistory:
"Buildings,libraries,andapparatusaregoodandgiveaddedpower,butthevitalcontactofstudentswitha
