In his first speech as mayor,

Violence a key
issue for Walsh
Mayor Marty Walsh spent
much of his first day at the
helm of the city talking
about his desire to curb
violence in Boston.
In his inaugural
speech, Walsh said he
plans to “redouble” the
City’s public safety
efforts.
“We have to make
our communities safer to
secure a future of opportu
nity for our kids,” he said.
Just hours after being
sworn in, Walsh met with,
mothers of homicide
victims, police officials,
violence prevention lead-
ers and others at his City
Hall office
“We are losing far too
‘many young people to
senseless violence,” Walsh
said,
Connolly, who attended Mon-
day's swearingin ceremony.
‘Since the win, Walsh has been
working on his transition, but
he must now switch to govern-
ing.
‘While he's announced ap-
ointments to positions includ-
Ing chief of staff and head of
Health and Human Services,
Walsh must still decide on a
schools superintendent and po
lice and fire commissioners.
In his inaugural speech,
Walsh outlined specific goals
for his term: improving educa-
tion and auditing public educa-
tion spending, strengthening
the economy and creating jobs,
improving public safety, and in-
<reasing trust and transparency
in city government.
Specifically, Walsh _men-
tioned his campaign promises
to restructure the Boston Re
development Authority and
reform the city’s permitting
and licensing process, which he
called “a complicated maze of
rales and regulations.”
Walsh also said he would
«create a new Ethics Committe.
