H omeopathy is a system of medicine which powerfully stimulates the body’s own healing mechanism to reinstate health and well-being. Around the body is an electro-magnetic energy field, or aura, which can be seen by some people, and this is where homeopathic medicines have their primary action. This energy animates all life and departs at death. It is called chi in Chinese Medicine and in Sanskrit, prana, which means breath or vital force. All matter consists of atoms which vibrate at different speeds. Homeopathy is the art and skill of matching the vibration, or energy, of the remedy to that of the person. Symptoms of illness are a vibrational language, therefore, which help the homeopath to select the most curative medicines. Over the last ten to fifteen years there has been a strong movement towards the idea of taking responsibility for our own health, which has resulted in a huge demand for methods of healing which take a look at the whole person - emotionally and mentally, as well as physically. There has been a subsequent growth in the popularity of homeopathy which has resulted in a much wider availability of remedies in health-food shops, pharmacies and supermarkets. It can be used very effectively in self-prescribing for treating accidents and minor ailments as long as the basic principles are adhered to. These are described on the following pages. Because many homeopathic remedies have a vast range of applications, it may be confusing to go into a shop and find some containers labelled for specific ailments, such as headache or indigestion; for example, Garbo Veg can be given to alleviate flatulent bloating, but it can also be used in an emergency situation where there is collapse and difficulty in breathing. For best results, remedies need to be matched to a group of symptoms, as short-cut methods may lead to disappointment. But in some first aid situations, remedies will work when chosen on one leading symptom only, such as Arnica for bruising. Homeopathic remedies are usually sold in tablet form but can also be bought as powders and tinctures. Tablets are easy to administer and are dissolved under the tongue. Although there are no conventional side effects, accidental ‘provings’ are possible. If homeopathic remedies are taken unwisely and repeated when no longer required, the symptoms for which the remedy was originally taken may return. This book describes how to apply homeopathic medicines to relieve pain, swelling, shock, promote the fast healing of wounds and sprains, and even soothe teething babies. Ordeals such as examinations, dental treatment and surgery are included, as well as jet travel, with suggestions to help you recover from jetlag, sunstroke, frostbite or insect stings. Remedies to help some mental and emotional upsets are also given. Long-term illness is not dealt with here, because these require regular visits to a homeopath for constitutional prescribing, but the acute stages of some chronic complaints are.
