In the second half of his book Le(cid:2)dieu(cid:2)égyptien(cid:2)Shaï (1975) J. Quaegebeur
discussed in detail the appearance of the god Shai in personal names, paying
great attention to the variants Ψαις/Ψοις in Greek transcriptions (pp. 245-262).
There he followed the methods elaborated by his master J. Vergote. In the
period 1969-1995 he wrote about thirty articles concerning Egyptian names
and words in Greek texts, though gradually his interest shifted to more general
problems of cultural history, with a major project of Egyptian religion in Greek
sources, and to archaeology, with the excavation of the temple of Senhur.
Here we have brought together and partly updated the articles in which Greek
renderings of Egyptian sounds play a major role. When these are put in
chronological order it becomes clear that in the 90’s onomastics and vocabu-
lary studies were just one way of tackling more general problems of cultural
history. As a result of this changing perspective, three articles (Art. XXV,
XXVIII and XXX) have only been partly included. In fact, since the end of the
20th century, linguistic studies of how the Egyptian language sounded before it
was written by means of the Greek alphabet in Coptic are far less popular and
also less systematic than in the preceding generation, when Vergote announced
his study De(cid:2)oplossing(cid:2)van(cid:2)een(cid:2)gewichtig(cid:2)probleem:(cid:2)de(cid:2)vocalisatie(cid:2)van(cid:2)de(cid:2)Egyp-
tische(cid:2)werkwoordvormen (= La(cid:2)solution(cid:2)d’un(cid:2)problème(cid:2)important:(cid:2)la(cid:2)vocalisa-
tion(cid:2)des(cid:2)formes(cid:2)verbales(cid:2)égyptiennes) (Brussels 1960). It is our hope that the
present publication will reinvigorate the field, which is far from exhausted,
by putting at the disposal of scholars the penetrating studies of a beloved
colleague, who died now nearly 25 years ago at the age of 52. Since that time,
his name has been entered in M.L. Bierbrier, Who(cid:2)Was(cid:2)Who(cid:2)in(cid:2)Egyptology,
London 2012 (p. 449) and in the Nationaal(cid:2)Biografisch(cid:2)Woordenboek 21, Brus-
sels 2014, cols. 905-910. His personal library is now in the Musée Champollion
at Figeac (France) and his archives in the collection of the KULeuven (Univer-
siteitsarchief PU Quaegebeur).
We have kept the texts as they were written in the original articles, but
added the pagination of the originals in the margin and also some notes of our
own (these are in a different font size from the original text and appear
between square brackets), mainly bringing up-to-date bibliographical refer-
ences. References to articles of Quaegebeur included in the volume have been
adapted by changing them into Art. + Latin number. Some books and articles
quoted many times in different articles have been systematically abbreviated
(see the list of abbreviations, on p. XI-XII). The reference system may be differ-
ent from one article to another, but it remains uniform within each article. In a

few articles we have adapted cumbersome papyrological references to the
conventions of the Checklist [https://library.duke.edu/rubenstein/scriptorium/
papyrus/texts/clist.html]). A typical instance are the personal names of female
scholars, which are in some articles fully written out, to the surprise of the
younger colleague in our team.
