Alpena, Michigan - 1882 1922 By L m i e LaCross and Rhea LaCross St. Anne Church Records, Alpena, Michigan Introduction St. Anne Church is a Roman Catholic parish located within the city of Alpena, four blocks to the north of the founding parish, St. Bernard Church. As the first Catholic parish in the area, St. Bernard was multi- ethnic and founded in 1860. By 1883 two additional parishes were developed and were split along ethnic lines. St. Bernard was known as the Irish parish, St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception as the Polish parish and St. Anne as the French parish. This publication contains information taken from the parish records. Readers searching for earlier information are referred to the publication, St. Bernard Church Records published by the same group. Book Format This publication contains listings of records of events which occurred at St. Anne Church. The records are listed in alphabetical order. Date: As listed in the original ledgers the date was occasionally listed as two dates in the baptismal and funeral records with the later date being interpreted as the date of the Church event. At times only one date was given. In those instances interpretation is at the discretion of the reader. Name: Names are listed alphabetically with the last name followed by the first name middle names, when given. The records were old, difficult to read and occasionally illegible. The early records were in Latin and often in French, which compounds the difficulty. Efforts were made to reproduce the names exactly as recorded to preserve accuracy and integrity of the records except for translating given names from Latin. On rare occasions the gender of the Latin name was not able to be differentiated. In those instances both name versions were given. While we believe that names were often misspelled, we made no attempt to correct them as it would reduce the integrity of the records and possible change accurate spellings which have changed over time. We have included a listing of alternative name spellings and name changes to assist in locating records. When the name was reproduced with great difficulty and uncertainty, it was followed by a question mark. Most of these records followed the French Canadian custom of using a woman’s maiden name instead of her married name in records. Therefore search under both a married name and maiden name for such information. Birthplace: While the ledger indicated this information in the funeral records to be place of birth, we suspect that it often refers instead to place of residence. The marriage records indicated where the bride and groom were from but occasionally refer instead to place of birth. Burialplace: Most of the burials occurred at the local Catholic Cemetery, renamed Holy Cross Cemetery in 1921. When the record indicated Potters Field, we believe this to be a designated section of Holy Cross Cemetery. Burials at Bell refer to the community of Bell, Michigan in Presque Isle County, about 20 miles north of Alpena. Godparents: In the baptismal records the godparents or witnesses were enclosed in brackets. Parents’ names were separated with a slash. This work was completed in February, 1997. Index The index contains an alphabetical listing of those persons mentioned within the records who were not the principals of the events. The index does not reflect the person being baptized, the bride or groom not the person being buried. Those persons are listed alphabetically within the main text. The parents of these principals, the witnesses to the marriages and the godparents of the baptisms are all listed within the index. Readers are also referred to the index for alternative name spellings and name variations. History The history of St. Anne Church begins with the 1860 beginning of the establishment of the Catholic community within Alpena and of the beginning of St. Bernard Church. This parish was a harbor of worship for all nationalities: Irish, German, French, Swedes and Polish. The belief at that time that people seek to worship within comfortable ethnic communities led to the establishment 23 years later of St. Mary Church for the Polish community and St. Anne parish for the French Canadians of the area. The first parish of St. Anne was the original St. Bernard Church on Chisholm Street across the street from the present St. Bernard Church. This parish of predominately French Canadians soon began the building of their parish church on Ninth and Lockwood Streets. That first Church burned in 1907 and was quickly rebuilt over the next 13 years to be completed in 1920. The master carpenter responsible for the building was an ancestor of ours, Hilaire Gagnon. It was said that he modeled this church on that of St. Anne de Beaupre in Quebec. Indeed there is a close resemblance between this Church and that of St. Anne prior to her destruction by fire in the 1920’s. St. Anne was served in its’ early years by Catholic priest from French Canada like most of its’ parishioners. Those pastors were: Father Peter C. A. Winter served from 1883 to 1884 Father Michael Letellier served from 1884 to 1886 Father Joseph Thaddee Hudon served from 1886 to 1888 Father Theodule Blais served from 1888 to 1892 Father Charles H.
