The distinction between fiction vs nonfiction books is a blurry one. Many books contain elements of both fiction and nonfiction.
However, there are some key differences between these two types of books. Fiction books are typical imagination works, while nonfiction books are based on factual information. Fiction books are often meant to entertain, while nonfiction books are meant to educate.

Joseph Salvatore is an Associate Professor of Writing & Literature from The New School in New York City. He says that fiction and nonfiction are different.
I teach a class on the craft, theory, and practice of fiction writing. We discuss this topic every day. While all ideas and theories are challenged and disputed by critics and writers alike (not just as to what fiction is, but also about other genres, e.g., creative nonfiction), there are basic elements to fiction.
Fiction is fiction that has been invented and is based on an author’s imagination. Fiction includes short stories, novels, myths, legends, and fairy tales. Fiction can be based on characters, plot points, and settings. However, some fiction writers use these things as jumping points to create their stories.
Stephen King, for example, sets many of his novels and stories in Derry, Maine. Although Derry is fictional, it is based upon King’s hometown of Bangor. King even created a topography for Derry, which is very similar to the actual topography in Bangor.
The real world often inspires science fiction and fantasy books set in fictional worlds. NK is an example of this. Jemisin’s The Broken Earth trilogy is an example of this. She uses real science and geological research to make her world plausible.
Fiction uses specific narrative techniques to increase its impact. Salvatore cites the following components as examples:
They use is rich, evocative sensory details. The changing pacing tempos for dramatic and non-dramatic activities. The juxtaposition between summarized narrative and dramatized scene; the temporary delay or withholding of story information to heighten suspense; the different use points of view; including stark objective effacement; and the stylized usage of language to narrate the events and render human consciousness.
Nonfiction is, however, factual information that reports on real events. Nonfiction includes biographies, essays, journalism, histories, and journalism. Nonfiction is usually held to a higher standard than fiction. Fiction can contain a few facts, but not enough to make it true. Nonfiction works may have a few fabrications that could lead to the story losing credibility.
One example is James Frey’s 2006 expulsion from Oprah’s Book Club. It was revealed that Frey had written most of his memoirs.
Nonfiction can often use many of the same techniques as fiction to make it more attractive. Cold Blood is widely considered one of the most important works of nonfiction to blur the line between fiction nonfiction. Capote’s detailed descriptions and events make it a highly evocative work. This has raised questions about his accuracy.
Salvatore states that the so-called New Journalists of Thompson’s, Wolfe’s, and Didion’s time used the same techniques as fiction writers. And certainly, the resurgence in true-crime documentaries on radio and TV uses similar techniques.
This trend has led to creative nonfiction. It uses fiction to report on real events. Lee Gutkind, the creator of Creative Nonfiction magazine, explains the concept in his article, What Is Creative Nonfiction?
Refers to the use of literary craft, the techniques fiction writers, playwrights, and poets employ to present nonfiction-factually accurate prose about real people and events in a compelling, vivid, dramatic manner. Nonfiction stories should be read as fiction, so your readers will be as fascinated by facts as fantasy.
It cannot be easy to distinguish between fiction and nonfiction. This is especially true when a skilled writer is involved. It’s fiction if it distorts the truth.
There is an easy way for books to be classified into two types. One can say some books are fiction, and the others are nonfiction. This same classification can be applied to films, television, and plays. However, the most common usage of fiction and nonfiction is still in literature. What is the difference? Sometimes, it may not be so obvious.
Simply put, FICTION refers to the plot, characters, and setting created by the author’s imagination. On the other hand, NONFICTION refers to stories that are based upon real events; the characters are also real people.
Fiction can be short stories, novels, or fairy tales. Fiction books can be set in real places, or they can be created from fictional towns that are inspired by actual cities.
Stephen King’s novels, for example, are set in Derry. Although this fictional city isn’t real, it’s partially based on Bangor (the town King grew up in).
It is common for science fiction and fantasy books to describe fictional worlds and events that never took place in real life. However, to make their plots more plausible, they often use scientific research. These books are fictional, even though actual research was used.
Fiction books are often written to enhance the plot and make it more exciting. The author may withhold important information and reveal it at the end. Or, he might choose to tell the story from the viewpoint of various characters throughout the story. This makes it more intense.
No fiction book is complete without metaphors, similes, and other techniques that keep the reader engaged with the story, unable or unwilling to put the book down.
Nonfiction books, on the other hand, are strictly factual. Fiction authors can let their imaginations run wild and make the story as exciting as they like. Still, nonfiction stories must be factual from the beginning to the end. Essays and biographies are two examples of nonfiction.
However, just because a book is based upon a true story does not mean that it cannot make the text more attractive.
Nonfiction authors often use descriptive language to evoke emotions. Creative nonfiction is the art of telling real stories in vivid and powerful ways that almost make it seem like they’re made up.
Skilled authors blur the lines between fiction and nonfiction, writing fictional characters as real people and real people as characters in fantasy books.
If you aren’t certain what you have in your hands is fiction, ask yourself if it reports the truth. It’s probably nonfiction if it does. It embellishes the truth.

Answer
Some people might prefer to read nonfiction books because they are factual and provide information based on research.
However, others might prefer to read fiction books because they are more interesting and can take the reader to different places and worlds. In the end, it is up to the individual to decide what they prefer.
