Editorial

We have become accustomed to referring to Hilton College as "world-class"
and it seems pertinent to interrogate that concept for a moment. Certain
ly Hilton has remarkable facilities comparable with any school in the wor
ld, and the added factor of the Estate compounds that; the school charact
eristically strives for excellence in all its endeavours, something which
is to be found in all outstanding organizations; and Hilton is able to k
eep company with the best and most famous schools in the world. All this
is true, but a school is a place of people, a place where individuals gro
w and flourish, encouraged and nurtured by supportive and concerned staff
. In this respect Hilton is also clearly world class, and we have reason
to be enormously proud of the graduates who pass through this place. Pros
pective parents regularly cite their experience of Hilton boys, or recent
Old Hiltonians, as the catalyst which sparked their interest in our school.
The Matric class of 2006 produced a remarkable set of results in the Ind
ependent Examinations Board Senior Certificate examinations. Amongst ano
ther list of very impressive statistics is the fact that four of our boy
s were amongst the top 50 candidates nationwide. What is
particularly important, however, about the achievements of our four "Top
50" candidates, and indeed the achievements of so many Hilton matriculant
s, is the breadth and intensity of the activities in which they were invo
lved. These were not super-studious academics, focusing on results at the
expense of all else that a Hilton education offers. They were actively i
nvolved in sport at quite high levels, all were musicians, completely com
mitted there, and the rest of their activities included debating, drama,
first aid and a busy societies' schedule. Three were awarded Level 3 Lead
ership certificates, (the equivalent of Honours) and the other, Level 2.
Ultimately, this is what renders Hilton College world-class: the rich var
iety of opportunities, and the fact that so many boys take good advantage
of the privilege of being educated here. That, together with the indepen
dence and confidence which this excellent boarding school nurtures, is wh
at makes Hiltonians, and allows us to remain consistently proud of our sc
hool.
