Technology High School "Above and Beyond" MISSION STATEMENT Our school is committed to a threefold mission of providing a college preparatory program for student who desire to further their formal education, a workplace readiness experience for students interested in pursuing careers in technology, and a school-to-career program for students who will pursue their formal education and career path concurrently. Our Beginning By Edin Ro ales, Editor and Chief of the Yearbook Staff In September of nineteen ninety-six, over one hundred freshmen stood before the doors of Technology High School. We anxiously waited to see what the closed doors would open up to. Upon entering the building, we saw for the first time the school that we would soon call our own. Throughout the past four years, those once anxious freshmen have grown and matured to become responsible, dedicated, and outgoing people. We have had experiences and have created moments that we will forever cherish in our minds and in our hearts. We have been through ups and downs, but with the help of our teachers and peers, we have learned to make the best of everything. We have learned to always be positive and try our best. Now, four years after that very first day, we stand together proudly and happily, not only because we have met our goal of graduation, but also because we are about to embark on a new journey, the journey of life. We will leave our friends and familiar surroundings and venture forth, for the first time into the real world. When we have accomplished our set goals in life, we shall look back to our formative years, where we perhaps learned the most about life. We will see that we have had the pleasure of having spent them at Technology High School, and for that we will always be grateful and proud. 2 BUILDING HISTORY In our exploration into the history of Technology High School, we discovered th.at construction of the school, which was built on the former site of the Kearny Homestead, began m December 1911. The school opened September 16, 1913. The school, which was then known as the Newark Normal School, cost $275,000, an extraordinary amount of money for the time. Ernest F. Guilbert of the Board of Education was the supervising architect. Herman C. Schneider Building & Construction Company, a Newark firm, built the structure. The school has undergone many name changes. It was first called the Newark Normal School; then, in 1913, it became the New Jersey State Normal School in Newark; and in 1937, The New Jersey State Teachers College at Newark. It was also used as the Newark Skills Center. In 1972, a new building was funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the State of New Jersey. The building was known as COED (Center for Occupational Education Experimentation & Development). In September 1974, the building was staffed and its first director, Vincent Russomanno, was appointed. The old building (now Technology High School) also was home to Arts High School during its rebuilding pha e. In September 1996, Technology High School, Newark's newest magnet chool opened its doors. Dr. Steven Kramer is its first principal. At Technology High, the emphasis is on excellence in the areas of academic and technological training. 3 And ning: Table of ontents. ___ ..:....~~::=:::;-;:::~-c;.z/~2=~~=-----=7~~~ rinciple' s Page._~o:---7~-------*,---------,.¥~----~~~~---Pag Faculty /Staff Pag 6 S · r D. ,ider_ ___ ___!!,__~!___~----~-~.P...::l:,;.;------1!c-----..!.;......r-~ Senior Coll ge._ __- ----;:,;___~----':l:------;.;.---;.;~:.;...;;.~'----....:.;-~:....:.......J~-; Senior Por a its. ----:7-----f:-----r.--------T:-i!--f.:..t+~~-------=:nt-ll--~"" Undercla men 33 Club I ctivities/Sp 42 50 Stu nt Life_-;.1!-------r.-----;:-------l~-----;++;..-----.;:,:.-.----n--- 57 World Bea Millennium ev1ew 4 Dear Graduates: Congratulations upon being the first four-year graduating class in the history of Technology High School. As a class, you have established many "FIRSTS" in our school. You have conducted yourselves with distinction and integrity and you have set a high standard for future classes. It has been my pleasure to watch you grow and mature during this time. Your progress over the last four years has been outstanding. You had the courage to entrust your education to a new school, which had not yet established itself. As a result of your work, Technology High School is known as an excellent school where students learn and excel. You are the first real Panthers! Never forget the pride that you brought to your school and to yourself. Never forget the Character, Values, and Ethics that are the hallmark of our school. Never forget that there will never be another first four-year graduating class. Good luck and may all of your dreams come true! Steven Kramer, Principal December 16, 1999 Four score and eight months ago we brought forth this graduating class to Technology High. It has been, for all of us, a pleasant and rewarding venture which now culminates with your graduation. You now go forth as mature, educated young adults to bigger and better things with my most sincere blessings and good wishes.
