Designed for both the public and the profes- sional, this extensive volume critically reviews self-help—books, autobiographies, fi lms, online programs, support groups, and Internet sites—for 41 behavioral disorders and life challenges. Our admitt edly ambitious goal is to guide laypersons in selecting eff ective self-help resources and to assist mental health professionals in recommending them to their clients. We separate the chaff from the wheat among the tens of thousands of self-help books and websites. More than a staggering 95% of self-help resources in mental health possess no scien- tifi c research att esting to their success (or failure) as a self-help method. Some bestsellers and popular websites even contain advice contradicted by the available research. If FDA approval were required for the usefulness and safety of self-help resources, then we estimate that fewer than 5% would ever be published. Flip through a popular book off the shelf: you’ll fi nd lots of testimonials and “amazing stories,” but almost never any hard numbers based on controlled research. Author boasts and client anecdotes don’t constitute scientifi c research. Th erein lies our mission: to bring careful research and practitioner expertise to the task of selecting and recommending self-help resources. Th e popular term these days for that task is e vidence-based practice , which integrates the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture, and preferences (APA Task Force on Evidence-Based Practice, 2006; Norcross, Hogan, & Koocher, 2008). S elf-Help Th at Works brings together, in plain language, scientifi c research and clinical consensus, secured through a dozen national studies, to publicize and enhance self-help that you can adapt to your goals, preferences, and culture. ■ WHAT’S NEW IN THIS EDITION Th is edition features a new title, a new publisher, and of course, new and expanded content. Aft er three editions under A uthoritative Guide to Self-Help Resources in Mental Health, we simplifi ed the title to emphasize our quest to determine what works. Self-Help Th at Works does just that. We are delighted that this edition will be published by Oxford University Press, inargu- ably one of the world’s largest, oldest, and most prestigious publishers. Oxford brings an unparalleled capacity to place the book in the hands of both laypersons and professionals. At the same time, this book joins their similarly titled, pioneering books Treatments Th at ■ ix
