TheLymeArtAssociationgallerywastheculminationof sevenyearsofplanningbyartistsFrankBicknell,William Chadwick,HarryHoffmann,WilsonIrvine,LawtonParker, WilliamRobinson,EdwardRook,andGregorySmith.The buildingsitewasadjacenttoMissFlorenceGriswold’sLate Georgianmansionwheremanyoftheartistsgatheredeach summerseason.ThelandwaspurchasedfromMissFlorencein 1917.ThebuildingcommitteechairedbyLawtonParker, workedwitharchitectCharlesA.Platt,designeroftheFreer ArtGalleryinWashington,D.C.Theplansforthegallery calledforperfectlightingandarchitecturalcompatibilitywith theotherbuildingsintheNewEnglandvillageofOldLyme.In itsreviewoftheopeningexhibition,theNewYorkTimes praisedthegalleryas,“anembodimentofartinharmonywith its natural surroundings.”Afourth spacious room, the GoodmanGallery,wasbuiltin1938.ItwasdonatedbyMrs. WilliamOwenGoodmaninmemoryofherhusband,aChicago artpatronandtheAssociation’sthirdpresident In1986the buildingwasnamedtotheNationalRegisterofHistoricPlaces andissituatedintheheartoftheHistoricDistrictofOldLyme, Connecticut. Inadditiontotheartistmembers’AnnualSummerExhibition, in1925theArtAssociationheldthefirst“WaterColor”show, nowknownastheSpringExhibition.Theseasonschedule expandedagainsevenyearslaterwiththefirstAnnualAutumn Members’Exhibition.In1938,theAnnualSummerExhibition addedwatercolors,pastels,prints,anddrawingstoadisplay previouslyrestrictedtopaintingsandsculpture.Thefirst AnnualAssociateMembers’Exhibitionwasheldin1992. TodaytheLymeArtAssociationhostsadiversescheduleof aitshowswhichrangefromchildren’sworkstothoseofits esteemedmembers.Periodically,retrospectiveexhibitionsof thefoundingartistsareheld,drawnfromletters,books, photographs, and otherdocuments intheAssociation’s archives. Further, in keeping with the Association’s commitmenttoprovideashowcaseforsomeoftheregion’s finestandnewestrepresentationalartists,thespaciousgallery isofferedasanexhibitionsitetothecommunity’sculturaland educationalorganizations. Associate Members are welcome to attend monthly businessmeetings; take partintheeverydayactivityofthegallery; andreceiveopeningreceptioninvitations toallexhibitions,theAssociation’sLAA Timesnewsletter,andtheannouncements ofworkshops,demonstrations, lectures, andspecialprograms.AssociateMembers whopaintorsculptmayalsosubmitwork toalljuriedexhibitions.Membershipforms areavailableatthefrontdeskinthegallery orbyinquirytotheLymeArtAssociation. ArtistMembersareelectedbyavote takenattheAnnualSeptembermeeting.Any interestedpracticingrepresentationalartist isinvitedtorequestapplicationguidelines. Artistdemonstrations and workshops areofferedthroughouttheyear.Special programssuchasoutdoorpaintingdaysor lectures sponsored with neighboring culturalorganizationsarealsopresented.
