ExhibitionsofLymeImpressionistpaintingsbegan in1902,andwereheldeverysummerinthePhoebeGriffin NoyesLibraryinOldLymeuntilAugust6,1921,whenthe presentLymeArtAssociationgalleryopened. American ImpressionistpaintersGiffordBeal,LouisPaulDessar, ChildeHassam,andWillardL.MetcalfjoinedwithWill HoweFoote,HenryRankinPoore,AllenB.Talcott,and CarletonWigginsintheearlyexhibitionsoftheAssociation. TheLymeArtAssociationgallerywastheculminationof sevenyearsofplanningbyartistsFrankBicknell,William Chadwick,HarryHoffman,WilsonIrvine,LawtonParker, WilliamRobinson,EdwardRook,andGregorySmith. The buildingsitewasadjacenttoMissFlorenceGriswold'sLate Georgianmansionwheremanyoftheartistsgatheredeach summerseason.ThelandwaspurchasedfromMissFlorence in1917.Thebuildingcommittee,chairedbyLawtonParker, workedwitharchitectCharlesA.Platt,designeroftheFreer ArtGalleryinWashington,D.C.Theplansforthegallery calledforperfectlightingandarchitecturalcompatibilitywith theotherbuildingsintheNewEnglandvillageofOldLyme. Initsreviewoftheopeningexhibition,theNewYorkTimes praisedthegalleryas,"anembodimentofartinharmonywith itsnaturalsurroundings."Afourthspaciousroom,theGood- manGallery,wasbuiltin1938. ItwasdonatedbyMrs. WilliamOwenGoodmaninmemoryofherhusband,a ChicagoartpatronandtheAssociation'sthirdpresident.In 1986thebuildingwasnamedtotheNationalRegisterof HistoricPlacesandissituatedintheheartoftheHistoric DistrictofOldLyme,Connecticut. Inadditiontotheartistmembers'annualsummerexhibi- tion,in1925theArtAssociationheldthefirst"WaterColor" show,nowknownastheSpringExhibition. Theseason scheduleexpandedagainsevenyearslaterwiththefirst AnnualAutumnMembers'Exhibition. In1938,theannual summerexhibitionaddedwatercolors,pastels,prints,and drawingstoadisplaypreviouslyrestrictedtopaintingsand sculpture. ThefirstannualAssociateMembers'Exhibition washeldin1992. TodaytheLymeArtAssociationhostsadiverseschedule ofartshowswhichrangefromchildren'sworkstothoseofits esteemedmembers.Periodically,retrospectiveexhibitionsof thefoundingartistsareheld,drawnfromletters,books, photographs, and other documents intheAssociation's archives. Further,inkeepingwiththeAssociation'scommit- menttoprovideashowcaseforsomeoftheregion'sfinest andnewestcontemporaryrepresentationalartists,thespa- ciousgalleryisofferedasanexhibitionsitetothecommu- nity'sculturalandeducationalorganizations. AnInvitationtojoinUs TheLymeArtAssociationmembershipis composedofnotedartists,loyalpatrons,and ardentadmirers—anyoneinterestedinshar- ingourenthusiasmformaintainingourhis- toricbuildingandprovidingashowcasefor areaartiststodisplaytheirlatestwork. Associatemembersarewelcometoattend monthlybusinessmeetings;takepartinthe everydayactivityofthegallery;andreceive openingreceptioninvitationstoallexhibi- tions,theAssociation'sGalleryNotesnews- letter,andtheannouncementsofworkshops, demonstrations,lectures,andspecialpro- grams.Membershipformsareavailableatthe frontdeskinthegalleryorbyinquirytothe MembershipCommittee. ArtistMembersarethegoverningbody oftheAssociation.Theyareelectedbyavote takenattheAnnualFallMeeting.Anyinter- estedprofessionalrepresentationalartist,liv- ingwithinareasonabledistanceofOldLyme, Connecticut,isinvitedtowritetotheScreen- ingCommitteeoftheAssociationtorequest applicationguidelines.
